You're going to need a floppy drive available!  If
you've got the floppy & Knoppix you should be able
to restore these floppy images with dd.  As a matter
of fact, I wouldn't try it with anything else attached.

We talking SIMM's or DIMM's?  If it's SIMM's they should
be matched pairs.  A single DIMM, if available, would
remove that incompatibility concern.

Which drive?  Wasn't it the Maxtor you already did?
If you'd disconnected the Seagate, which drive is this?

Some drives are noisier than others.  How long did it
take to get a command prompt again?  If it wasn't
immediately, then it probably did its thing.  And then,
don't forget Linux caches lots of disk I/O.

DOS5 usually has a config.sys.  Looks like that floppy
isn't complete.

You're going too fast, and your reports are too sketchy
for me to be sure what's happening.  Try to be more
explicit.
