-> You're going to need a floppy drive available! If
-> you've got the floppy & Knoppix you should be able
-> to restore these floppy images with dd. As a matter
-> of fact, I wouldn't try it with anything else attached.

Heh, already beat it.
Got your email about using dd to cp to floppy.
Very educational that.

-> WC> Removed RAM trying various combinations.
->  WC> No joy.

-> We talking SIMM's or DIMM's?  If it's SIMM's they should
-> be matched pairs. A single DIMM, if available, would
-> remove that incompatibility concern.

DIMMS.
Three banks, all 128 Meg.
1st two matched Micron, third Samsung I think.
Anyway they needed to be moved about a bit before they cooperated
when first installed five months ago.
Micron needed to be in banks 1 and 2
No memory problems since that time.

->  WC> Replaced RAM.
->  WC> Disconnected Seagate.

-> Meaning? Just the Maxtor, or no drives at all?

Been all over the place the last few days.
Currently Maxtor only.
It shall remain that way.

-> WC> dd'd te drive ( or rather tried to) as though it appeared to comply

-> Which drive? Wasn't it the Maxtor you already did?

Yup.
After reconnecting te Seagate slave it got mental on me again.
Tried all sorts of stuff.
Finally the drive actually zero'ed
Only thing I can think of is I left the machine off long enough
and had disconected the slave.
I'd done all the same before.
This time the Seagate shall remain unattached.

-> If you'd disconnected the Seagate, which drive is this?

-> WC> I never head the read - write heads move at all.

-> Some drives are noisier than others. How long did it
-> take to get a command prompt again?

Well it _sounds_ like it's writing zeros sequentially to media
as it's a small sound unlike the thrashing the Windows OS does.
This is something I like about Linux, much less thrashing around it
seems.

-> If it wasn't
-> immediately, then it probably did its thing. And then,
-> don't forget Linux caches lots of disk I/O.

It was actually far slower than the original 45 minute pass.
Went to sleep, awoke it appeared done.
Repeated today it worked.

-> WC> fdisk - l reports the drive's accepted the new partitioning, however
-> WC> on boot to a DOS 5.0 installation disk the system complains about
-> WC> a bad command interpreter and missing drivers in config.sys.
->  WC> What config.sys???

-> DOS5 usually has a config.sys. Looks like that floppy
-> isn't complete.

->  WC> Shouldn't be one.

-> Should be!

Yeah, senior moment again, sorry.
A simplified config.sys.
Not the customized CD-ROM driver specific optimized version
I'd put together to be found on what was formerly hdb.
That's why /dev/hdb is no longer hooked up.

-> WC> This is becoming really, really spooky.
-> WC> Every new attempt at it it seems to anticipate
->  WC> and thwart.

-> You're going too fast, and your reports are too sketchy
-> for me to be sure what's happening. Try to be more
-> explicit.

Try to be less senile?
I'll try.
The ongoing Linux experience is intended to keep a few of the neurons
connected just a bit longer.
Bear this in mind when texting me.
It comes in it goes.
