MA> DOS is not a solution on a Linux system. Windows can help you
MA> identify hardware and what IRQ it is using and a bit more.

There are some DOS diagnostic programs, and they have the
advantage of no Windows trying to control things, so get
to the real hardware directly. My test-bench machine uses
DOS.

MA> As for BIOS flashing well you won't need to go down that raod
 MA> for some time.

But he still needs to make sure there is no 12v power to
the flash PROM. Wayne!

WC> Examining the RAM was a waste of time but worth doing to eliminate it
 WC> as a suspect.

MA> Something can't be a waste of time and worth doing.

As Sherlock Holmes said, when you've eliminated all the
things it can't be, then what you're left with necessarily
must be it. So it may have been poorly worded, but
essentially correct.

MA> You panicked and went off like a scatter gun. Instead of solving
MA> the problem you caused yourself unnecessary grief.

Perhaps, but that's what confusion causes. There are times
when the best advice is: don't just do something, sit there.
And times when it's the other way around. The trick is knowing
the difference.

MA> 'cos these days most good H/Ds don't make any noise.

But his Seagate is 234MB! My Connor 210MB is 15 years old!
Even his Maxtor is only 2GB, and that's old enough.

WC> Writes to DMI event log on every boot.
MA> Unreadable disk because you zeroed it and probably left LILO
 MA> in the MBR.

Seems so, but would the BIOS be smart enough to write to
an arbitrary HD partitioning scheme and file system? I'm
not sure WHAT it thinks it's "logging" to.

MA> Pay no heed to my impertinance. I was letting off steam.

One needs to be extra careful in writing.

WC> No, the config.sys on the floppy was a very sparce and basic one.
MA> Logic should tell you that if you have no config.sys on the
MA> floppy or the hard disk you will get error messages. This is a
MA> DOS problem and of no interest here.

One thing he needs to do though, evidence abounds, is
prepare his disaster recovery paths NOW. He's sure to
need them, and now he knows why! ;-)

MA> How can you expect people to help you if you keep giving
MA> conflicting advice? In one message you say there is no config.sys
MA> on the floppy or H/D next you say it is on the slave drive.

Yes, Wayne. It was very hard to follow you and give
pertinent advice. When in such a situation one must
slow-down, not only to make sure one has a solid grasp
of just what's going on, but to allow advisors to
keep up.

MA> Not neccasarly. fdisk tries to guess the architecture of the disk.
MA> I've never zeroed a disk before but i bet if you used sfdisk

We haven't heard from Maurice yet about whether dd
does an absolutely thorough job of zeroing a drive.

MA> you could see it. Be warned sfdisk can if you don't know what
MA> your doing, ruin your whole day.

But it can make it too! sfdisk can save/restore a
partition table.
