We don't talk about a disk being "online". If a disk or partition is
in the box then you describe it as being mounted or unmounted.

If a disk or partition is unmounted then to all intents and purposes
it is not read or writable to the network of which you server is
a part of. The only exception to this is for actual disk work such
as fdisk'ing or fsck etc.

You can see now how completely useless this statement is to a Linux
user. It throws up some important obscurities to the reader.

What is the box you are talking about?

This is not a triviality because Linux is a network environment
so you could have a hundred "boxes". How are we to know what
position "this box" plays in the network. Has the disk been
active in another "box". So we gave each machine a name.

In your case we will assume that you are talking about your
main server first.local. You see if the disk has been active
on second.local then how do we know if second.local didn't screw
the disk up? Of course you needn't keep naming your machine
to us because we can assume you are talking one machine, your
main server.

You have a habit of describing your partitions and disks as just "4" or
slave but this again gives us no indication of exactly where in or what
role the partition or disk plays in the system (first.local). You must if
you want help start using Linux speak so hda is master hdc is CD and hdb
slave. That is of course if that is the _exact_ position of those media.

For instance you say in you last line you describe hda as being the
"first physical drive". hda, hdb and CDrom are all "physical drives".

How much easier then and less open to missinterpretation is it to
describe your last line thus.

Linux user speak:-

hdb was mounted/unmounted when Linux was running on hda.

Similarly if you say that the Linux boot partition is on hda5 the
a Linux user will instantly know it is in an extended partition
on the master disk.

If it were on hda2 then again a Linux user will instantly know
it is running on the second primary partition. 

I think you may be at a disadvantage because Knoppix is limited
as to documentation regarding fundamental Linux babble.
