Yea i sometimes telnet in from Konqueror web browser. You can't
upload a rep though unless you implement rz. If you use "konsole"
there's an option to upload Zmodem but I've never used it

WC> This BBS the exception as it uses active html transfers.

I did find another board that allows fido using a web browser.
Not surprisingly they both use the same BBS software. It's a long
story but there is a reason i prefer to use web based BBS boards.

Ok telnet and zmodem are not the best way for computers to
communicate but you will go down that road because you must learn
for yourself. The only reason i can dismiss telnet/zmodem is because
i went down that road myself. It isn't just nostalgia in your case
because if you were weened on the fido and you want Linux to do
everything you could do before you decided to make it your
operating system. Once you master telnet/zmodem you may like to
explore setting the system up as a dial out terminal.

Linux is compliant with fido BBS standards on the client side if
you wish to go down that road. I usually travel the road far enough
to know i can do it and i know how to do it but then i ask myself.

Do i need to do it? Will i ever use it? The answer is probably no
on both counts but i'm glad i learned how to do it.

MA> There is a free Linux telnet client that dose zmodem is some where

 MA> Bterm

 WC> Heard of it.

MA> Last i saw it travelled as "bterrlii.tar.gz"

WC> I'll be googling for it today.

Ztelnet gets good press and you've found minicom for your self
so there is harm shopping around.

MA> Install this program if you want see to what a load of crap zmodem
MA> is. This is because it's a DOS protocal and only cloned by Linux.

MA> Believe it or not i was going suggest i send you a compiled version

WC> The problem I had was with the precompiled version.
WC> Once I got the source and compiled it locally it
WC> worked so fast it made my head spin.

Yea. Precompiled would have been an option if you didn't have a
development environment set up.

MA> I'm pressuming you're using mcedit as your editor as per the
 MA> .mmailrc file.

 WC> I don't really like mcedit.

I'm surprised you coming from a DOS background that you don't
appreciate it's nuance. I use it because it integrates with "mc".

I use mc a lot when i'm doing stuff on my local network. mmail works
best on a raw tty terminal so as far as i'm concerned kde needn't
be called. I find it handy if for some reason X has thrown a wobbly
and i need to traverse disks and read shell scripts etc. Of course
it can all be done from the command line but....

WC> I'm using kwrite as a stopgap quick and dirty editor until
WC> I brush up on VI.

I've seen many complain about how difficult it is to use vi but
none complain about having learned it. It may be the only option
if you are working from a boot floppy.

WC> ( Maurice likely just had a cardiac event on reading this)

Stinking Maurice.
