Hey WAYNE!

Good for you. I got suckered into that years ago and although I don't regret
looking I definetly don't recommend it.

WC> Frustrated at the syntax and complexity of the firewall

Yeah. Most of that relates to iptables and not really to unix syntax in
general. I figure if any app has that sort of complexity built into it there
is a chance it might not be a good idea for a home based system. Far too much
can go haywire if the one responsible for configuring it doesn't appreciate
what they are doing. In the case of iptables I found myself scratching my head
over things I don't even use or even want. I am only using one aspect of it
and have found that some sites out there don't appreciate it which is fine with
me as there are many other sites that can easily fill that void. Unless you're
planning to set up server apps on the internet much of that just gets in the
way and can easily distract you from what is really important to you
specifically.

Take them with a grain of salt. Often I've found hardware issues to differ
from what is written as being the way to do things. Also much of the howto's
are specific to the way a certain distribution does things and not general
enough to be of much consequence in the grand scheme of things.

That happens.

WC> OTOH I did look ayt Bterm just as a means to an end.
WC> Martin is right, Bterm is lame.
WC> I wouldn't have used Bterm in a DOS environment.

Me neither. Besides straight telnet is WAY better. If you think you need the
perl 'cat' method I'd be happy to post what little I have on that particular
subject. Having said that, I still prefer and use straight ftp here and would
much rather learn to configure a ftpd to handle offline messaging and move onto
other things. I've done all the comparing and contrasting I care to do on that
type of activity.

WC> ITMT I've found Xterm recognizes rz and sz but not yet figured out

bash scripting is best wrt rz/sz but I believe you will discover it to be less
then desirable on the issue of file transfers of any type. It works but so
what? There are better and simpler ways.

WC> Undoubtably something simple I'm missing.

Probably not.

 WC> I'll get there.

Probably. However I am willing to bet you'll discover it isn't what you want
and definetly not what you need. Not many out there that support rz/sz
transfers to start with so you're probably entering an area that has been
abandoned years and years ago.

Life is good,
Maurice
