 WC> I suspect it's identical to Intel's i440BX.

I can ask a buddy of mine, but I'd bet money iNTEL
never actually MADE any of it's recent MoBo's.

                        (I lose!)

 WC> I do not comprehend.
WC> I saw flared tabs that seemed to indicate the rails swung away
 WC> however they're rock solid.
 WC> Could you rephrase.

OKEY-doke. I can try. I've got a Pentium-II in hand with a big
honkin' heat-sink and fan. The top edge is one solid piece of
plastic about 5" long. At each end there's a little cylindrical
thingy about the size of a match stick--you remember wooden
matches!--set across the width of the CPU case. That's the
T-handle for a latch that holds the processor into a pair of
plastic rails coming up out of the MoBo. When the latch is out,
the CPU is latched in the rails, there's a 1/4" gap between the
top of the CPU case and this little cylinder thingy. If you
press that in toward the CPU it will snap back releasing the
latch. ASCII art's a bitch, but see if this translates (use a
fixed-width character set and don't let lines wrap:

  o_+------------------------------------------------------+o
  | Latched Retracted |
 -| -|
 \| /|
  | Front of CPU |
  | |

Then you can just pull the CPU up and out of the rails & socket.

WC> I'll be inside the box in a day or two to set the BIOS jumper to
WC> configure to see what's available.
WC> You know what's pissing me off now?
WC> No image file for the BIOS upgrade.
WC> It's a executable for MSDOS boot disk

That's why my Compaq pizza-box has a Windows partition.
That's what I need to setup/control the modem.

WC> Hmm, this is a Pentium III Katmai.

Slot 2? Oops. Never actually had one of those in my hand.

New research. My iNTEL buddy says that should be just like a
Pentium II Slot-1 cartridge. (Also says Jabil didn't make Intel
boards.) Look for those T-handles in the top corners. (Says
SOME mfrs put in CPU's in ways that meant they were never coming
out again.)

WC> Checking through google today on upgrading processors
WC> I find Pentiums need to be recognized by the BIOS, or so it's
 WC> said.

Yeah, after the original Pentium-1's that everybody was
over-clocking iNTEL got really pissy about people getting more
performance out of the CPU's than they paid for. They weren't
happy about those Celeron-A's that ran with a 100MHz bus and
went from 4.5x66 300's to 4.5x100 450's!

The fact is, you're better off not messing with such things.
The best that can happen is you shorten the life of the CPU.
And frankly, in my experience, unless you can get 100%
improvement, it's not worth thinking about. P1-100 to P1-200
is a noticable difference, and easy to do. But if you're
already at 500MHZ you've got to go up to 1GHz to make an equally
notable difference, and it ain't so easy.

WC> All I've got is linux here so no way to transfer the executable flash
WC> to diskette I'm aware of.
 WC> Tried mcopy.
WC> Tried cp -a -t msdos but got not a bootable disk
 WC> when rebooting to floppy.

FreeDOS on floppy? I can send you an image file. ;-)
(You might have to give me a while, we're dealing with my
brother in law's final few days.)

WC> Yeah I'm hip to that.
WC> No switch however I yank the plug at the male end.

It'd be better if it had the switch. That way you can power-off
and still have the box grounded through the plug.
