I plan to however I've often found I learn a great deal from
crash - burn, restore.
Unlike the motorcycling experience though there's no road rash :-)

I have trashed installations several times, and restored them learning in
the process.
Nothing to get upset about.

WC> Rather a bit of a turnaround from the guy that was so intimidated by

Ah, time to cultivate an air of aloofness <g>
Nah, gotta extend the same courtesy I've gotten to others.

I've had some failures here, persisted though.

I'm putting in the new hard drive in the next ten days or so.
I've had the drive and card for a couple weeks but am now just getting
up to the task.

Question: ( quite possibly stupid)
Are the only two places I need to concern myself with the locations of
partitions the software resides on /etc/fstab and the boot loader?

In the context of doing a backup to the new hard drive hung off a secondary
I/O controller /dev/hdb

What I'm getting at is if I could install a full new Linux to hdb1,2,3
physically remove hda,1,2,3 on which the current release is on
Edit /etc/fstab transposing hda for hdb in fstab and the bootloader
altering initrc.img and the kernel ID to match as well, run lilo from the live
CD then
boot right up?
Get my meaning?

My idea of a good way to upgrade while hopefully retaining my current setup
on the original drive, if it's doable as I describe that is.
I've done *some* of this in effect in recovering successfully from screwups
but am getting a tad ambitious perhaps?

My plan is to install the second I/O card and drive, partition, backup
everything
I've downloaded by way of software, files and multimedia then do a reinstall
or upgrade.
Now I'm configured to my satisfaction I'm less interested in tossing it all
away and starting from scratch, at least as far as one hard drive and one
backup are concerned.

WC> Looks like at this point in time I elected the correct journey to
 WC> embark upon :-)

MK> It sure does. Just reading your messages over time confirms it to me.

Believe me it's self apparent as well.
Strangely enough some of this has been like being a biker as I was into
every aspect of that from doing my own maintanance and tweaking the hardware.

I've always been about hands on.
All but my first motorcycle were acquired used exactly the same
as my computer experience.
All of my used hardware ( bike or box) was superior to my first new purchases.
Most of my bikes were Honda or Microsoftlike.
Linux is like my XS-1100 Special, all go and hang on for dear life
Strange.
