Hey WAYNE!

Always a good plan especially when new input directly relates to what you have
or could easily obtain wrt you particular circumstances.

Might be fixable. I'd need to see specs first. The price is right.

I got that much from a search.

WC> Their software web page URL is just what you'd think and there's a

I saw something but not really anything worth the effort as far as it revealing
any useful information. Same old, same old not unlike most sites these days.
My best guess about the particular box you talked about is that it probably
will accept the Matrox G450 AGP card and thus be capable of providing the good
stuff without the usual bloat. Having said this, there are other good deals
out there but if I were you I'd wait until MicroSoft releases their next
version of their lame OS as that will cause prices to drop further on hardware,
specifically motherboard/cpu combos. I think that will work out the best from
your perspective. Also I was looking around and found some great deals off in
your direction wrt both AGP and ESPECIALLY PCI cards that would be of better
interest for mplayer and console based graphics.

WC> I'd love to hand off that link but it doesn't exist.

Right. I couldn't find out much. However I definetly am willing to pick up
the slack there for you whenever you feel up to it. Peice of cake. :-)

WC> MadTux has three entry level systems the lowest cost of which uses a

I am guessing AMD, probably Sempron on a S939 board. The only AMD64 I have
played with thus far was a AM2 based one and it was good other then the nforce
chipsets. Intels are WAY better.

 WC> Linspire or some such.

Easy enough to ditch I would think.

WC> Needn't concern myself overmuch until I can fund the adventure.

Right. I wouldn't rush if I were you. Besides I almost have it cased wrt pure
64-bit and am willing to share.

WC> Yes, I am coming around more.
 WC> Now hate Flash.

I've never found a need or want for it so no opinion here.

WC> Spending lots more time at the command line.

I've seen some stuff about that somewhere but cannot recall what now. I think
it had something to do with ftp.

WC> Well I've a bunch of those purchased used from someone but none
 WC> tested good.

I've got at least 30. Some of them even have eproms but I don't have a burner
and they have some silliness burned on them. I just take those off and have a
box full of them collecting dust. I thought I might do something about them
but so far haven't worked up any motivation.

WC> OTOH I've an NE2000(?) network card still sitting in the defunct H.P

NE2000's are worthless. Novell can keep them.

Right. The neighbour has a couple of those.

Perfect! Those are worth hanging onto.

WC> Yeah, now I'm looking for the file to edit to stop it from loading

One of the rc's. I haven't played with X for awhile now and I don't recall
which one offhand. Also /etc/inittab might need to be ditched for a more
favourable one.

 WC> This puppies' a Voodoo Banshee 3Dfx.

I don't know anything about them. Seems to me there was a framebuffer driver
at one time but don't quote me on that.

WC> It does full screen from the GUI launch, half screen from the command

Right.

Take your time. I am in no rush.

WC> I ain't recompiling nothin just at the moment.
 WC> This setup WORKS.

Perfect.

WC> Practicing now as it's now my OLR editor :-)

I need to do that soon. Currently I do email with vim but haven't done it with
Fido ever since some DOS-think BBS's started duping everything in the Perl echo
that didn't match their standards. I noticed that happening in this echo too.
Unreal. They can keep it. ;-)

WC> Oh yeah, I modified a Perl script I found while searching for LAME
 WC> syntax

There is a bunch of stuff like that. You may also wish to find the imagemagick
perl modules as those work great at creating gui menuing and the such. I
played with that once upon a time and thought it was worth it. Vaastly
simplified those sorts of things.

WC> I took some C in school after my spine was broken to try to get back
 WC> into the
 WC> workforce
WC> and Perl looks a lot like C.

Simular. Not quite 100% portable but close.

WC> I'm thinking I'll stay 32 bit compliant for legacy hardware, unless
 WC> of course
 WC> i change my mind and don't ;-)

So far it hasn't been an issue here or at least not on the Intel board. The
AM2? The nforce chipsets seemed to be out of whack but that was probably due
to the lack of support from that particular direction. They can keep them.

Life is good,
Maurice
