VIA Samual II 800 MHz whatever that is however this is *not* the unit I
was looking at but their $140 low end PC.

The one I was looking at has an Intel Celeron:
I can't say anything about the vendor, this is not to be taken
as a advertisement or recommendation just for discussion sake.

MadTux 2.53 GHz 64-bit Affordable Performance PC $199.00 $179.00

The MadTux Affordable Performance PC is the perfect way to get started with
Linux for those on a budget who desire higher performance than the MadTux
Low Cost PC.

( the latter is the VIA CPU PC)

This is a 64-bit system that will run x86_64 or x86 versions of Linux.

The MadTux Performance PC has a 2.53 GHz Intel EM64T Celeron D Processor
with a 533MHz FSB, 256MB DDR 400 RAM, 13.6GB 7200RPM Hard Disk and an
embedded Intel Extreme Graphics engine, 64M shared memory, one AGPro slot,
3 PCI slots, 1 CNR slot, 2 available SATA slots (internal), and
2 UltraDMA IDE slots.

An onboard Realtek ALC655 6-channel audio CODEC supports uncompromising DVD
audio quality, bringing a more vivid sound experience and high-quality audio
without having to buy advanced sound cards.

The Performance PC has a Realtek 10/100 LAN port to connect to your network
or broadband connection without having to buy an extra LAN card. It supports
Ultra DMA /100 IDE devices, with data transfer rate up to 100MB/s.

A 300W power supply, 4 USB 2.0 ports and plenty of room in the case for
expandability makes this a must-have at an amazingly affordable price!

These are brand new PCs with the CPU certificate of authenticity from Intel
included with the package.

RE: Icop

MK> I think it had something to do with ftp.

Linux firewall distribution.
From what I gather that's all it is at around 30 plus Meg.
I may download it just to look at the docs until such time
I've a machine to slap it into.

RE: Network cards
WC> Well I've a bunch of those purchased used from someone but none

WC> OTOH I've an NE2000(?) network card still sitting in the defunct H.P
WC> and a Linksys 10/100 in this system.

MK> NE2000's are worthless. Novell can keep them.

Well I didn't have a stable Linux back then so I guess I could try some of
those
3Com cards agin in a second PCI slot or the ISA 3Com in the 1 ISA slot I have
and look at them again.

I also know a lot more about what I'm doing now.

WC> no longer venturing out to walk a dog I can't stumble on a discarded
WC> Dell, Emachine, Gateway or H.P. to see if swapping out the H.P.'s
 WC> goofy
WC> SFX form factor power supply would bring it back to life.

MK> Right. The neighbour has a couple of those.

I need to look up the pinouts again ATX versus SFX.
There's just a 1 pin difference and I think it's where they dropped
-12 volt or -5 volt interface electronics support.

I can then make up a short conversion cable to use a stock aftermarket
reliable brand ATX supply.

WC> That would be sweet though as I saved the 64 and 32 Meg sticks of RAM
WC> out of that machine when I'd upgraded it.

MK> Perfect! Those are worth hanging onto.

WC> Yeah, now I'm looking for the file to edit to stop it from loading
 WC> KDE.

 MK> One of the rc's. I haven't played with X for awhile now and I don't
MK> recall which one offhand. Also /etc/inittab might need to be ditched
MK> for a more favourable one.

I'm not messing with it until backed up in depth shortly.

 WC> This puppies' a Voodoo Banshee 3Dfx.

MK> I don't know anything about them. Seems to me there was a framebuffer
MK> driver at one time but don't quote me on that.

All I know about it is it's AGP and works rather well in 1024x768.
I've saved svgafb.txt from my distribution to my text directory for review.

WC> Mplayer does full screen from the GUI launch, half screen from the command
 WC> line
 WC> so I know it's doable.
WC> I just my lack of proper syntax or video driver selection.

 MK> Right.

WC> Sounds nice and perhaps too much for me just now as my plate is
 WC> pretty full.

MK> Take your time. I am in no rush.

RE: Perl scripts, finding

Yeah, why reinvent the wheel?

WC> I took some C in school after my spine was broken to try to get back
 WC> into the
 WC> workforce
WC> and Perl looks a lot like C.

MK> Simular. Not quite 100% portable but close.

Haven't done much yet with it only that simple script modification.

Well this has run too long so I'm off to study this for a few more days.
