I trust the parenthetical comment above is a typo and is not in fact
directed at me?

I was around at that time, though more as an active user and shareware
collection than Sysop, and I certainly empathized with PKWare as did
most of the folks I knew, but in this thread I am merely commenting on
part of the DVD contents (the interview with the ARC author) and not
making any judgement at all about its accuracy.

Watch the interview yourself.  That will give you the same information
that I'm working with, and it will allow you to comment a bit more
accurately about its contents.  Speculating about it isn't meaningful.

That certainly isn't the impression given by the interview with Thom,
which (if I recall correctly) contained the following tidbits:

(1) Phil Katz was allegedly proven to have a copy of SEA's code in his
    possession, and parts of that code were proven to be in the PKARC
    source code.

(2) The lawsuit was mainly intended to stop PKWare from illegally using
    SEA's own code in a competing product (PKARC).

That's the impression I have after watching it once maybe six months
ago, and it's possible I'm misremembering, but I don't think so.

Again, watch it yourself.  If it's seriously incorrect, perhaps you
need to make that fact known to the creator of the DVD.

It's a shame Mr. Katz isn't alive to defend himself and give his side
of the story.

The impression I came away with from the DVD was that SEA's lawsuit was
completely justified because Katz stole SEA's code, and SEA was roasted
on the public stage because Katz was much better at PR.

Whether that's an accurate assessment or not, I cannot say, but that is
what the DVD strongly implies.  If you have an issue with that, take it
up with the producer of the DVD set (Jason Scott).
