Hey now I was talkin hardware not software.
I made plain I'm Debian and Slackware exclusive as of recently.

Quality hardware is virtually defined in this 1999 Gateway.
Even the full tower easy access case is sturdy enough that four of
them would IMO support a Ford F-150 pickup were one
placed undere each corner of it's frame.

Not to mention rock solid standard electronics and chipsets.
Even the cirrus based motherboard SoundBlaster compatible audio is fine.
good thing i was a hardware hacker bback when though as when first got working
in record I had ultrasonic feedback and recognized what was happening
by seeing the levels squeg in audacity.

Missed that one but got a hoot out of an introduction to Linux
 guide recently read.
May google for it Linus recent BIOS
For some odd reason they seemed to think Linux superior to to Microsoft
Windows.
You'd never believe the number of negatives in windows they pointed out.
Well, you and some here would.

Don't feel the need to keep apace my posting.
I'm trying a different tact of deluging on with on topic.
Need to force a break myself as despite nothing else to do
these marathons take a lot out.

Or do if you're bored and have mobility issues that make such pleasurable.
Your call.
I'm also available kevlar@verizon.net
And I do screen at the server before downloading local out of habit so to keep

malicious stuff out.

MK> My biggest beef about the latest development has been with the
MK> nforce/nvidia crap. I am glad I put that behind me although I still

Yeah I heard the chatter on that and it don't sound good.
I've got a 16 Meg AGP Voodoo video card I'm quite happy with.
sure there';s better but it suits me fine for the time being and
gives no problem.
I believe it can handle 64 Meg shared memory with 16 Meg on card video RAM.
Either way for now it's no fuss no bother.

MK> would like to play with AMD's on a decent board if they ever make a

I'm getting irked the with motherboard manuals from manufactuirers
when you can find them they're in PDF format.
What good is that?
zless be good why not gzip them?

Zless is more <G> or less, well smaller anyway, lots.
Hey is their an bzip2 equivelent?
Come to think of it I never tried zless on a .bz file but
intuition says it might not compute block size compressed with as that's
file size and block size discretion at the compressees end.
oops, overtired alert, proof reads confusing.

Once again we're on the same page.
I've had ATI graphics on 486 boards and they worked fine with no trouble unlike
some I could and did cuss at.

Today started out rather badly but it's slowly gotten rather better.

I need tofind a newsgroup that's worth a darn but they seemed all filled
up with nonsense last time I looked.
Lot's of arrogant people talking down to newbies in the Linux echo and making
fun
and taking shots at them.

There's no need for any of that IMO
You, Paul, James, Martin and one or two others didn't talk down to me
or lord yourself over me with airs of arrogant superiority.
You helped me to get to a foundation of knowledge to where I could learn and
operate independently on my own.

From that humble real beginning not so very long ago I've made pretty fair
strides.
No longer type out entire paths but tilde / to copy and mv to and fro.

Lynx another day when once again feeling bold and less likely to be intimidated
nby the unfamiliar.

Hey anyway it was a great awakening that /dev/sda came right up into play.
Should have intuited no problem but pleasantly surprised.
A better day I'll see if it will boot out of there Linux being less BIOS
dependent
perhaps GRUB will facilitate that?
Cannot see why not as a drive is a drive is a device is a file.
Strange and wonderous critter this Linux be :-)

Taking a break now.
