But Maurice I'm not working from the boot CD, that was half an hour ago.
I ran mkrescue and booted into Slackware from floppy.

I don't think it will work but later I'll try invoking
mkrescue from /mnt/usr/bin after mounting hda3
I'm guessing it's the kernel that controls and not the
proximity to the binary as would be the case with a DOS executable.
We'll see.
Mind's turned to fudge again but not so bad.

MK> You need an upgrade which can't be done on a CD. MPlayer-1.0rc1 looks
MK> good. Played everything I threw at it.

Hmm, that's nice.
That resides on hda3 in my download directory which as yet
I've not figured out how to boot to if mbr recoverable.

Still I can mount it and copy it over to Slackware
then compile it.
IIRC from the mplayer web site it's the whole shebang
with codecs included.

Bout jumped out of my shoes when the kde desktop in
Debian announced "initiating system shutdown" when booting
fd0 back into Slackware.

MK> Upgrade!!! Get rid of the live CD. You can do better. I didn't
MK> bother with codecs, skins, etc. with MPlayer-1.0rc1 and it works great.

 No, I will not.
Not until I figure out how to get this hard drive to boot
or swap out for the recently recoved hard drive ;-)
 Just obstinate I guess.

WC> I can look but occupied with other fun stuff just now.

MK> Take your time and have fun. It can all wait.

Going to have to wait a bit, back in slow motion.
OTOH can do it by swapping out the drive but want to see
if the MBR or bootloader can be fixed first.
 That will have to wait.

WC> Won't boot to the hard drive at all but all three partitons are
 WC> there,
WC> well, all 8 partitons I should say.

MK> ?????? They can't all be primary ones since ide only can handle 4.

Well they're not primary now but they were last night
before I trashed the MBR on first physical.
I had three primary on first physical hda1 slack, hda2 swap,
hda3 Debian then and uncertain of order here as it's brand new
since last night sda extended, hde1 primary, hde2 primary,
 hde3 primary and hde4 primary.
Rebooted and it came up Debian on hda3 just as it
 had before adding the drive.

Then I messed up moving the drive to its permanent location from
the bottom of the case where checking it.

That's when the cable backed out and system would not boot off of
 hda's mbr grub bootloader.

So thinking myself that Linux does not support more than four primaries
I'd thought that might be what was interfering with the boot
process and deleted hde's partitions and remade them extended.
Your head probably aches about now trying to follow my strange
 travels.

WC> Well maybe tomorrow I'll put ttylinux on one of hte many hard drive
WC> partitons that seem to be sprouting up all over.
WC> I wouldn't be at al adverse to that.

MK> It's a good idea. Also you could use that to chroot from to a beefier
MK> system on a HD partition and/or use the ttylinux system to install
MK> other beefier systems to a HD partition and make that bootable.

 Another lamer admission.
Not a clue as to what chroot is even after having checked man page.
Something to do with changing shells is all I got.

 WC> I think i'll copy over hda1 and hda3 to hde1 and hde2 first as
 WC> backup.
WC> Save me the trouble of recompiling mplayer and lame once I find out
 WC> if
 WC> the MBR is recoverable.

 MK> Good idea.

Yeah, the next good idea currently on backorder<g>
that certainly was a short day.

WC> Time to toss the Windows 98 CD as it's no longer usefull
WC> in the limited capacity of fdisk /mbr as it jumped past hda and was
 WC> looking at hde

MK> Sounds like a bad mbr on hda then.

Alright now we're on the same page.
Hows about giving a poor slob a hand in how to best proceed?
I have the rescue floppy to get to Slackware on the still
accessable seemingly undamaged hda1 where I currently am
but that's when the lights went out again.

WC> How about a third hard drive and 8 partitions?
 WC> That's what I've got now.

MK> Sure. Sounds good to me.

Had tears running down my face this morning laughing everything
was working so well and nothing I did seemed it could fail.
 Now, not so much.

WC> I've two more _dead_ drives here and one more seconday IDE controller
WC> channel, I wonder if either of them will resurrect???

MK> Possibly but I won't bet the farm on it. ;-)

Me neigther, got giddy with the momentary brainn function
and success with what was thought a dead drive.
Maybe it just needed a two year nap on the shelf?

WC> How very mundane of you to have your physical drives in the standard
 WC> logical order.

MK> I can be anal about things like that. Also the new board only has one
MK> ide channel. Four sata ones though and more usb-2 ports then I really
MK> cared about but they are there.

I am quite anal about such things typically myself Maurice
however with limited equipment and means I hadn't been anticipating
so much success so quickly and my accomplishments ran out ahead of
 my planning.

WC> I tread my own path and mine are all over the place.
WC> I can add an /hdf later today if feeling bold.

MK> Here it is sd's. What is currently possible is from sda to sdj without
MK> adding a thing but only hda and hdb as it stands now. I could add
MK> another ide controller but I figure this is already overkill.

I wanted to go all sd myself to take the load off the PS
moving it outside the box but had an old ultra66 I/O card
which had been in here when I got it.

As I'd had more than considerable trouble with an identical card som, eone
assured me was good I just hadn't messed with it.
come to find out that particular expert was no expert at all
and was wrong about the card he supplied inexpensively was no good.

WC> Well once again I agree with you however I need to get something to
WC> boot out of the MBR or 1st primary hda1 first.

MK> That is usually the easiest.

 Whatever.
It will all work out in short order I am confident.
not quite as confident as this morning but I shall overcome.

In closing after a bit of rest I'll compile the suggested mplayer
package already here you mentioned.
leaves me up the river on hte firewall though.
invoking iptables returns no such command thus I don't believe it
exists in Slack 10.2 at least as how it is configured in the later
kernel.
I _think_ I've seen iptables here but it fails to operate.
Kernel issue possibly?
