Okay.  Myself I am not that far along and am happy with chrootable development
partitions or loop mounted initrd's until I am happy with the results.  Then I
just archive the entire thing and call it a keeper.  :-)

Not very professional but it has worked out great for me and I am the only one
using them so why jump through additional hoops?

Probably.  Given that I am not a distribution it isn't an issue with me.

Same here except that I've been doing that for so long now I've trimmed off
quite a bit of the 'fat' which is usally packagers and the such.

Okay.  Myself I don't bother in the initrd's since depending on the target
machine all that is subject to change until I commit something to that target,
which may or may not happen.  For instance the usb flash disk boot may boot on
a wide variety of capable machines and they are likely different as to
addressing and the such as well as have multiple networking interfaces on
multiple networks, including wireless these days which we don't have a dhcp
server for and aren't really interested in setting up.  This way someone trying
to hack in would need to know how we do things beforehand and it is unlikely
that person could figure it out without a ton of head banging.  :-)
