Hi Carol,

CS> Zod? Sorry, new acronym to me. Sounds like Fedora from the text?
CS> I'd love an installable version too if you feel so inclined?

Each Fedora version has a name. Zod is the name for Fedora Core 6,
Bordeaux was Fedora Core 5, FC4 was called Stentz, FC3 was named
Heidelberg, FC2 was named Tettnang, and FC1 was Yarrow. I don't
choose them. I believe the codenames started with Red Hat. It is much
like Microsoft which is calling its latest attempt "Vista".

CS> Only if it's 'legally ok' to do that though. I'm not asking you to do

Nothing prohibits it. All Fedora releases are completely open source.
If I wanted to, I could have a small charge for distribution media,
shipping, etc, but not for the distribution itself All this is in the
Fedora FAQ at: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FAQ ,

CS> Ok, works for me. Then Fedora 'plays well' just like XP does (at
 CS> least with XP).

I know that there are drivers available to let Linux read and write to
NTFS partitions, but I prefer to keep them isolated. I don't want XP to
muck about in my Linux partition for sure! If I need to transfer a
documemt from one OS to the other, I prefer to go through a flash drive
and a reboot.

CS> Grin, (whisper, get another toy! Go on! Do it! Ya know you wanna!)

I am waiting for the right moment when I have cash on hand to cover it.
Right now, we have the bill for the new furniture coming due as well as
insurance. I don't want to go into debt for an item that I don't
actually need.

The live CD I am sending won't have the Flash player. In the FAQ, it
explains that Fedora is using only open source which isn't patent
encumbered. That also means that it won't play mp3 files out of the
box, although it isn't too hard to find and add the parts needed to do
so. It will play ogg, flac, and Speex audio formats and Theora video.
The Multimedia part of the FAQ covers this more thoroughly.

Fedora defaults to Gnome, but it also has KDE available to be installed.
I don't use it as I prefer Gnome, so I can't tell you how well it is
integrated nor how well it works. IIRC, you can choose the packages
during install or after using Pirut, which is the package manager tool.

Taking a quick look, Gnome, KDE, and XFCE are the available desktop
environments.
