I have a friend who has used the PowerPC, SParc, Arm and possibly one or two
more platforms in addition to his x86 systems.

By changing to not use debs you lose much of why you would want to run a Debian
system. For you, Slackware or something similar might be best. Alternatively,
you could learn to package your own .deb files and work your system that way.

DC> Ultimately it has more to do with how we use our systems and what we

MK> Right. I like to tweak.

DC> One aspect that I believe Debian excells at is upgradeability.

DC> Debian won't include proprietary matter. Ever. Period. However,

MK> Amen. Very good idea methinks. I've seen the light many, many,

See Linspire for an example of a Debian based distro that includes proprietary
software. I think Xandros might be similarly based upon Debian. Mepis is also
Debian based and I believe has a per pay commercial suite of applications
included. Ububtu has a slightly different idea of what is meant by free. They
seem willing to incorporate compiled and released to the masses for free items,
whereas Debian itself won't distribute something whose doc files aren't also
considered free and open source. See the Debian.org website for specifics.
