Ärende: Ide Cdrom & Scsi
========================
MK> Maybe. Is the bios set to boot to CD first? Also if you plan to
MK> actually boot a kernel off an ide cd-rom then the kernel on there

No, not the problem I'm trying to solve. I did try setting the
BIOS to try the CDROM first in order to see if that would cause
it to recognize the CD is there, to no effect. So I reset it.
This is an installation floppy. Its function is to give me an
environment I can install my version of Linux from. It needs to
be able to get 350MB of tarballs off the CDROM.

MK> better have ide cdd-rom capabilities built right in and not
MK> modular. Same could be said about sata and usb drives. If

I really do want it to be modular. I need it to be adaptable to
a wide variety of configurations. That means SCSI or IDE, those
are easy. I'm externalizing the modules because I can't predict
what options might be necessary and I don't to have to modify
the content of the initrd. Building it in might be easier in
some ways, but less adaptable for a tiny initrd.

MK> those two are not the issue(s) then I'd check the syslinux
MK> configuration and make sure there isn't an error there.

No, I'm not going to mess with sata or usb or an iso- until I
get this floppy system sorted. One step at a time!

 PR> CONFIG_IDE=m
MK> Should be built in if you plan to boot from ide.

But I'm not!

 PR> CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDE=m
 MK> Build it in.
 PR> CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDEDISK=m
 MK> Build it in.
 PR> CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDECD=m
 MK> Build it in.

I'm going to install on SCSI too. I don't want to waste the
space in the kernel.

 PR> # CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDETAPE is not set
 PR> CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDEFLOPPY=m
 MK> Just say 'no'. <BEG>

If & when I rebuild the kernel. That's one I don't think I'll
need to support for installation. For now I'm going to use the
Bering kernel.

 PR> CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDESCSI=m
MK> This one can stay modular. The only time you'll need it is
MK> with CD burners and it is doubtful you'll ever need it on
 MK> bootup.

That will go too if I recompile. This is an installation
floppy!

 PR> # CONFIG_IDE_TASK_IOCTL is not set
 MK> Set it.

What's it do?

PR> So all the IDE support is modules.
MK> Fine if you never plan booting from any ide disk/device.

BINGO!!! Boot from floppy, partition/format [hs]d, copy
tarballs from CDROM to [hs]d, start cloning script.

MK> If the kernel is on a scsi device and the / is on a ide
MK> channel then it'll work. If the kernel is on an ide device
MK> then it likely won't no matter what you tell lilo.

No, no, no.

MK> I doubt that will work if the kernel is on the device and
MK> doesn't already know hos to handle that device. It might
MK> but I wouldn't bet the farm on it. I know that when
MK> booting usb disks I require the kernel on there to already
MK> understand usb disks, hubs and a basic protocol or it won't
 MK> boot.

It boots fine from the floppy. If it's a straight IDE system,
the initrd finds both hard drives & CDROMS. If it's straight
SCSI, it finds them both too. But I've got an IBM z-system
sitting here that does this too, UW-SCSI hard drive & IDE CDROM.
