Probably but I cannot imagine that being too enviromental friendly.  I
certainly wouldn't try that in a closed enviroment without additional breathing
aparatus.  Also would be careful about the immediate enviroment catching fire
as well.

Overall I wouldn't recommend it.

More often then not it is the media at fault but burners do wear out with time
and usage.  Also too much work involved when there are so many better ways of
accomplishing the same thing as CD's (DVD's too).  Personally I prefer the
flash disks as they behave more like regular drives and don't require burning
type software and the media is definetly more reliable overall.  They also have
a limit but that is mostly write cycles rather then enviroment and/or time.  If
your laptop can boot usb devices then that might be something appealing to you.
 Mind you it doesn't have to boot to be able to install and/or read from a usb
drive.  Also, also upgrading them is a possibilty which doesn't exist in CD/DVD
world other the RW's which are questionable as far as compatibilty issues are
concerned.

Definetly something to consider.

First off figure out what functionality you want/need and we'll take it from
there.  I am positive anything you need/want is extremely doable.  Far moreso
then the unmentionable OS you are looking to replace ... eventually.

As if you had a REAL choice eh?
