I believe you made a mistake above... the root '/' partition needs to be at
least 2gig (more is better unless /home is elsewhere), however the /boot
partition doesn't need to be nearly that large. 100-200mb should be plenty big
enough. It only holds a couple of kernels and some boot environment files. My
year old Ubuntu system that I upgraded through two or three major revisions and
a half dozen or more kernel upgrades only uses 56mb in /boot. The swap
partition should be at least equal to memory, 2x memory (or more) if you have
less than a gig of ram. BTW, you don't actually need a seperate /boot directory
if your / (root) directory will be found entirely within the first 2gb of the
drive (BIOS limitation on seeking bootstrap code form the MBR). 

If you go with the minimal size root partition of 2gig, I highly recommend
adding a larger /home partition. The beauty of having a seperate /home is it
can be used with multiple installs on the same system for a relatively
consistant desktop between systems, or to preserve the /home space when wiping
and reinstalling the OS.
