 I think you have a choice of how the twisted pair is provisioned.
 IIRC ISDN BRI has two A-channels for telephones and fax machines
and the like and a B-channel for alarm systems, data terminals and
so on. (There is the equivalent of a B-channel to supervise the connection.
You have a choice of one or two telephone numbers, etc.

A phone company guru may jump in here and straighten me out - 
I think IDSL bonds two A-channels and provides an IP instead of
a telephone number.
 
The two ISDN installations I've heard about are our
Telecommunity Center which has - I think - six A-channels,
three go to the videophone and the others are for the office and
the low-buck teleconferencing. IIRC we had four telephone numbers.

The guru of our Linux user group bought the telecomunications
for his employer. IIRC they bought an E2 (the Europian version of
the T-1) which they chose to bring in as an ISDN PRI. They bought
42 telephone numbers, three IPs, 24 inexpensive IP phones
and 24 expensive IP phones. They also have one POTS line and
ordinary ADSL for backup. This cost about $6000. The phone bill 
is about $350 a month.

They may have experiance that encourages this.

In Texas and in California the phone company did not encourage
residential ISDN. However, in California (at least my urbanized 
California) a business *IS* encouraged to go ISDN. Two telephone 
numbers on ISDN are cheaper than on POTS ... cheaper still if you
only need one telephone number for two A-channels ... and the 
B-channel operates the credit card scanners, etc., basically for
free.

My phone company -- Verizon, was General Telephone -- offered
me ISDN. IIRC they volunteered the idea when I got a second line.
