Ärende: Kermit, BBS UNIVERSALITY
================================
Hi Maurice,

About "Kermit, BBS UNIVERSALITY" of October 1:

MK> Kermit has a place here for sure...
MS> I promote UNIVERSAL BBSing thru `Kermit' whenever possible...
MK> It certainly is well adapted for that purpose...

Indeed. :) Many years ago i verified that even minimally equipped
PCs allow networked messaging and i share my experience whenever there's
an opportunity - which is what i refer to as promoting UNIVERSAL BBSing.

                                  8-)

MS> ...it will be a pleasure to visit your BBS and contribute...
MS> Winston Smith is another `Kermit' fan - we both read `RIME_DOS'. I
MS> would value mutual cooperation so, please, post an ~URL~ when ready!
MK> Will do. I would appreciate your input.

The `RIME_DOS' EchoMail should be accessible to you on these BBSes:

          telnet://bbsnets.com (Area is #2460: `RIME-DOS')
          telnet://chowdanet.com (Area is #1586: `R_DOS')
          telnet://pinkrose.net.dhis.org (Area is #12048: `R DOS')

Todd Cochrane's `BBS NetWorks' system is where i go most often; if
it's Off-Line, Craig Healy's `ChowDaNet' BBS is my 1st alternative and i
may happen to visit Marie Michele Dalene's `Planet Maca's Opus' BBS when
these options both fail simultaneously... I once used to read this echo
on `RelayNet's ~NNTP~ server (news://news.relaynet.org) but not anymore.

MK> ...would appreciate knowing where to send a username and password...

I discovered that you're located in British Columbia but there's no
BBS at telnet://24-dot-108-dot-41-dot-234:23 just yet; simply drop me a
note on `RIME' when you want me to get validated there, unless i got the
~URL~ wrong or something? ;^) You must know it can be faster to get in
touch with me via EchoMail (since i don't check ~E-Mail~s very often)...

                                  ;-)

I'm sorry to mention `RIME' in this `FidoNet' echo, by the way! No
LEGACY BBSers like me would need to seek refuge in a `RIME' echo to have
convivial correspondance and reasonable signal-to-noise ratios combined,
euh... if Thom Lacosta hadn't supported guys like Steven Horn each time
small-talk obscured Legitimate topics in my favourite `FdN' echo, before
he imposed total silence on me, i must point out! %-o Which reminds me
that it may be better appologize to God about any Off-Topic content in a
side-note before another EchoMail area is closed, actually!... Hummm...

Hell, i just don't have time to spend over that sort of side-notes!

                                  %-)

So... :) Is the Shaw cable company OKay with you running servers?

                                  ;^)

MK> ...test it out and ensure that your DOS setup can handle it.

Something tells me we're talking ~SSH~ all the sudden. If it's the
case then i'm afraid no single pure DOS client will include `Kermit' and
~SSH~ simultaneously anytime soon! Well, i may be wrong but there could
be a good alternative, in any case: i saved `COM/IP v4.0' for occasions
like this;  i'll need to verify that it would allow `Kermit' over ~SSH~;
if i must rely on ~SSH~ sessions lets hope it's there!!! Under DOS, the
Virtual ~TelNet~ MoDem is `RLFossil' instead of `COM/IP' but performance
is similar, `COM/IP' is newer and has more features than `RLFossil' so i
figure ~SSH~ is probably one of them. If ~TelNet~ is OKay, don't worry!

                                   :)

MK> I don't have any DOS... Looks good... They did an excellent job...

I'll be glad to give it a shot! 8-) Of course, the cps rate i can
reach on a 8088 4.77 Mhz is going to be about a few hundreds, it's a few
thousands on a '486 (still over DialUp) and more than 10 thousand if you
can fully exploit my most performant `Kermit' setup (over 128 Kbps ~DSL~
on a P-200 Mhz). Once done, we'll publish a "Ready-Made" SysOp kit! :)

Lets remind our audience that if no Local DialUp BBS is left around
the only alternative to retain the Look and Feel of this venerable hobby
is ~TelNet~ and, contrary to BBSers who depend on `Windows' to gain INet
access, DOS LEGACY BBSers don't have a significant part of the computing
resources consumed by unrelated tasks as a Fire-Wall and Anti-Virus. We
already had PCs capable of transfering a file via ~TelNet~ before it was
even supported by the available peripherals/SoftWare more than 2 decades
ago!... All it takes is a 2K4 bps MoDem (Error Detection/Correction and
serial-port ~FIFO~-buffering are optional!) or one 8-Bits (~ISA~) ~NIC~!

Instead, authors/SysOps on whom we depended for this hobby embraced
a technological spiral... Why care to make SoftWare efficient enough to
do the job on a 4.77 Mhz PC with only 512 Kb of memory and no Hard-Disk,
especially when asking users to UpGrade is "cool" and promoting `Kermit'
is called weird evangelism by SysOps like, say, Rob Swindell anyway?!...

                                    Salutations, ;-)

                                    Michel Samson

I believe some talented people at Columbia were after excellence!
