Ärende: Kermit, BBS UNIVERSALITY
================================
Hi Maurice,

About "Kermit, BBS UNIVERSALITY" of October 3:

MS> ...from my perspective, `C-Kermit' wasn't meant to be... ~IKSD~...
MK> ...I could probably dish out... ...whatever. What do you want?

Well, if the purpose is to retain use of ~OLMR~ and other BBS doors
then ~SSH~ is a suitable replacement for ~TelNet~, i suppose, but if the
goal is to make BBSing UNIVERSAL, euh... it would help promote *LEGACY*
BBSing too ONLY WHEN USERS CAN SWITCH to regular ~TelNet~ (once the ~IP~
address is verified and they went thru ~SSH~ validation). I'm one BBSer
alone, it's unfortunate enough to find that there are individuals who'll
turn into baboons as soon as `Kermit' is mentioned, euh... ~IKSD~ would
certainly sound a bit too proprietary to a vast majority of BBS SoftWare
authors/SysOps who avoided to finish their work for so many years (which
was to ensure that no file transfer gets compromized by their transition
from DialUp to ~TelNet~)... :) Protocol drivers are more transposable.

                                  ;-)

I once saw a lot of negative reactions against the use of `Kermit',
this made me mention that ~FTP~ could be made interactive enough for our
.QWK doors to be built around it; there would be no exclusions there as
~FTP~ SoftWare which gives access to the command-line is available for a
variety of environments, after all. This LEGACY protocol makes room for
expansion: the BBSers can send a command to the remote server which, in
this case, would respond to a subset of ~OLMR~ commands - ~TelNet~ to an
~FTP~ server, it helps to imagine the type of interactivity which i have
in mind. ;^) Of course, it isn't less proprietary than `IKSD' but most
users are likely to find a suitable application (~FTP~ is widespread)...

                                  8-)

MK> Why not? Looks good in a normal telnet session or a ssh login.
MK> With a bit of tweaking I might even get graphics to work.

All right, i got no doubt about the `Kermit' file transfer protocol
and it's quite probable ~IKSD~ (which `C-Kermit'/`K95' integrate) should
work great too; i'm just worried, as a BBSer, that i'll find the choice
of applications to be rather limited though... %-o The `Kermit' server
isn't that different from ~FTP~ and the script language probably favours
your concept in comparison to the later. 8-) I'm going to share my own
expertise of `Kermit' and ~OLMR~ BBSing if you don't mind to stand alone
in the wild! I just regret no "Ready-Made" kit will come out of it. :(

I must determine where to obtain ~SSH~+`Kermit' support, unless you
agree to grant ~TelNet~ access in ~POP3~-before-~SMTP~ fashion? ;^) If
only it were an easy matter to install `Linux'/`C-Kermit' on LEGACY PCs!

MS> ...bet on the `Linux'/`C-Kermit' combination for superior results...
MK> The neighbour and I are going to compare wireless transfers...
MK> We've been having a few glitches there from time to time and kermit
MK> might be exactly what we're looking for to clean that up.

Brazil is a place where communications are said to be miserable and
people who were responsible for organizing an election, not so long ago,
chose `Kermit' because it manages well with noise - better than `ZMoDem'
would have, in any case!... %-b, Quite frankly, i find your project to
be so *STIMULATING* i can't wait to read about your preliminary results!

                                  8^)

MS> ...a BBS out of `IKSD'... ...has little to do with the Look and
MK> Feel of DialUp BBSing - unless you got a surprize in reserve???
MK> It streams really nice on the LAN. Was planning to try a video...

If you compare it with `ZMoDem', `Kermit's internal Error Detection
& Correction mechanism is equivalent to ~CRC-16~ only but `Kermit' still
has an edge when it's used over NetWorks - not to mention that "Block-3"
compounds with error-handling done elsewhere... I think you'll succeed!

                                  B-)

Keep me posted, i'm curious about ~WiFi~ BBSing! :) I forgot
where but i once read `Kermit' would be able to send data to the moon...

MS> I can specify port numbers both with `RLFossil' or `COM/IP'...
MK> I'll stick to straight text... I take it your client can handle the
MK> c-kermit command set? If it works we'll talk and see what you think
MK> as far as a proper internet capable BBS ought to be.

It's a surprize to find a SysOp who's willing to expose a system to
the outside world by giving access thru a `Kermit' service. To me, it's
been a long time since i used this function but it will be so refreshing
i can't ignore the opportunity! ~APC~ functions are very powerfull, the
"PathName" item implies you got a high level of confidence in your users
if you don't limit access... I'd urge you to pay attention to SECURITY,
there's been `Kermit' packages with setup defaults improper for BBS use.

You don't have to allow anonymous LogIn but `MSK.INI' is suggesting
basic security measures, in any case. It would be safer for you to look
at my `FdN_Windows' post, i was providing the ~URL~ in this quote below:

MS> ...another guy who specializes in providing more bad advice:
MS> http://fidonet.sensationcontent.com/echomail/windows/ (Oct-3-2004)
MK> Good one.

Nice aborted thread where `Kermit' spells change guys into baboons!

                                    Salutations, P-)
