Ärende: SMB Networking
======================
Hello, mark.

Tuesday November 10 2009 at 12:34, you wrote to me:

OS/2 Warp 4, Warp 4.52, eCS1.2 and eCS1.2MR.

Should be easy-I've never tried with Vista here (the latest I have is XP on my
wife's machine).

That registry setting? LMANNOUNCE = 1.

Using SAMBA, you have to set this in the [Global] command set in
/etc/samba/samba.conf:

client lanman auth = yes
lanman auth = yes
plaintext lanman auth = yes
lm announce = yes

This is going off of memory; I switched Linux distros from Debian to ZenWalk (a
much better distro for me) and haven't dug back into my notes to set up SAMBA,
but I'm about 95% sure that's correct. :)

Oh, to make sure it all works? Go into a shell and type: smbtree (assuming you
have the Samba command-line utils package installed). You'll get shown your
entire SMB network in URI format (smb:\\share\volume).

For OS/2 Warp, this is what I've done:

1) Go in to MPTS and do the following: change the NETBIOS adapter number to 1.
Add NETBIOS OVER TCP/IP and make sure its adapter number is 0.

2) DO NOT REBOOT, but instead:

3) Edit \IBMCOM\PROTOCOL.INI. You need to make sure these lines look like this
(the actual file was highly edited for brevity):

=== Cut ===
[NETBIOS]

   DriverName = netbios$
   ADAPTER1 = netbeui$,1
   ADAPTER0 = tcpbeui$,0
=== Cut ===

You have to make absolutely sure that ADAPTER0 is set to tcpbeui$.

4) Open \IBMLAN\IBMLAN.INI and change the first two lines of [networks] to:

(This file was edited for brevity)

=== Cut ===
[networks]

; The last four fields may vary from my setup depending on your
; adapter, but you must
; manually add net2 and again, make absolutely sure you put TCPBEUI$
; first and /change the adapter numbers/ (the second field)

  net1 = TCPBEUI$,0,LM10,34,100,14
  net2 = NETBEUI$,1,LM10,34,100,14

; The second thing you need to do is change all instances of WRKNETS and
; SERVNETS to NET1,NET2. There is two instances of one and one of the other-
; I can't remember which is which.

; Example:
  wrknets = net1,net2

; While you're at it, you might fix these two lines to fit your system. They
; don't get changed properly in Warp 4 and 4.52 due to an installation bug.

  Computername = NSBBS
  Domain = OUTPOST

; Don't forget to change this line from 'yes' to 'no' like I have-this way
; it will broadcast its shares and other info to other computers on the
; network properly. SAMBA can be very picky about this setting.

  srvhidden = no
=== Cut ===

4) Now you can reboot.

5) You may want to pop open a CMD shell and type: net start peer to activate
Peer Networking.

6) Go into "Connections and Sharing" (I think that's it) and you can configure
more from there.

Forgive me if this seems sketchy, but this does work-I've been using this for
the past 10 years and I have never had a problem with OS/2 being seen. Windows,
however, can be very retarded with OS/2's Peer Network and can cause weird
errors (such as "all connections are used"). If that happens, I do have a fix.

Good luck with this and I hope this will work for you.

Later,
Sean
