Ärende: Install of NIC

A DSL modem with an ethernet interface is the most flexible I can imagine, and
also is the easiest for all operating systems, since almost all operating
systems has drivers for an ethernet local area network. A ethernet lan can also
easily be used to give more than one computer access to the internet.

A firewall (and perhaps a virus scanner) is almost mandatory for security
reasons. If you want to connect more than one computer to the internet, then a
router is necessary.
A router can be software running on the computer connected to the internet with
a firewall software running on that computer and that computer must be running
to give the other computers access to internet. Or a router can be hardware
with a builtin firewall. The advantages of the separate small hardware box are:
1) it's easy to setup (follow the guidelines) and transparent to use (=very
easy to use); 2) all operating systems with network support can easily access
internet via the hardware router.

If you choose the hardware router, then choosing one is vital. Choose one with
good security options and a good builtin firewall. I've done this for a friend,
but I can't remember at this moment which hardware router I have choosing for
him, because that was some time ago. I'll look up that info this week.
