Thats not surprising, a Firewall does not NEED a DNS to do its stuff, it may
use one, but it does not HAVE to have one, and if it does, then it should NOT
hold up operation if it can't resolve a name! I can see a FW needing a DNS for
reverse lookups, but not forward lookups, and it should not impact on other
application performance.

The resolv file will be for the dialer, and it probably gets massaged each
dial-up depending on what DNS is fed from the PPP connection. Remember that
InJoy will be massaging your Routing whenever a dial-up connection is
established, hence why the file date/timestamp changes.

That should be irrelevant, a PRIMARY DNS Server will only be Primary for the
Domain(s) it directly services, for all other domains, it is the same as a
caching server anyway... Now it may be that they have a problem specfic to the
caching only server(s), and this is sounding plausible, especially if they tie
in with the DHCP Server.

You have a static IP, yes? If so, does that Static address keep being "updated"
at semi-regular intervals, and if so, are those updates co-inciding with your
loss of DNS resolution? If so, then there is probably a link between the DHCP
Server updates and the DNS server updates, and there is a synchronisation issue
somewhere between them. Perhaps the primary Servers are being updated ok, but
not the pure caching Servers.

Also, what happens if your ISP DHCP updates WHILE Injoy is connected, who wins
that tug-o-war???

I think you will find this is not strictly the case, I use a caching DNS here
and it works flawlessly for me, but only when I had it set up correctly.
