The code is written & can be copyrighted. The binary.....is not written but
compiled.

If the above were ever to make it to through the long dark tunnel of time till
they are a public good (probably long after the authers are dead as are their
children) then the written form would be required for use in say a copyright
library.

Does any software company deposit source code in the library of congress in
return for the government's gift of the copyright?

If not, why not?
