Sunnyvale (CA) - Almost one month after AMD signaled it would respond to
Intel's then-forthcoming Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Extreme releases with
substantial price cuts, based on the latest performance data from Tom's
Hardware Guide, TG Daily now projects that average street prices for Athlon 64
X2 processors now fall as much as 41.4% below the price/performance curve set
by comparable Intel processors.

Our price/performance curves for Intel and AMD dual-core processors are based
on the latest benchmark data obtained from Tom's Hardware Guide. We've
projected a performance index for these processors based on how well they
perform in five distinct categories, relative to how well an old single-core
Pentium 4 2 GHz CPU used to perform. This morning, we updated our data with the
latest performance results in general number crunching, gaming, applications,
video processing, and audio processing, with each category representing 20% of
the total score. We've also added new data for two dual-core Pentium Extreme
Edition series processors, the EE 840 and the EE 965.

For the latest projections, we sharpened our estimate of gaming performance, so
if you've been following our price/performance index stories throughout the
past month, you'll want an explanation as to why we did this: Previously, we
used Doom III as an indicator of gaming performance, mainly because our data
for Doom III stretched back the furthest number of years, back to the P4 2 GHz
period. But Doom III, to borrow a term from gamers, is "old," so we've replaced
the Doom III performance data with new data from Unreal Tournament 2004. Tom's
Hardware Guide has compiled data for both old and new processors in Unreal 2004
performance; however, there are "old" tests and "new" tests, both with slightly
different methodologies but regarding the same game. For a handful of
processors - including Intel's EEs - we have data for both old and new, which
gives us a relative scale. So based on recent numbers from the new tests, we
projected how older processors would score if they were tested using the new
methodology, using a mathematical formula. This way, we'll be able in the
future to add data from newer processors to our projections, with that data
being based on the newer Unreal 2004 tests. The performance indexes we derived
for Unreal 2004 did not differ substantially from our scores for Doom III.
