Ärende: Re: LCD, PLASMA, DLP
============================
From: "Scott Franklin" <scotty@spirit-wolf.com>

Glenn:

I had the opportunity to get an HP 5880n after researching a month or so. I saw
it in a showroom and thought that I'd be happy with it (and I am). Single chip
DLP it is, 7-segment wheel it has, rainbows on occasion, but these are my
reflections on the unit
(http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/product_detail.do;jsessionid=FZtOL2
ChUcROXPC6M6AqNVky2hCIoqOCXV265GkCDWY2OmS6TFCw!-1273060375?storeName=storefront
s&landing=entertainment&category=flat_panel_tvs&orderflow=1&a1=Type&v1=MDTV&pro
duct_code=L1798A%23ABA&catLevel=2):

1) Rainbows are artifacts caused by fast eye movement; if I keep my
eyes still, I almost never see them. Good set placement is key (at least for
me, I'm sensitive to rainbows).

2) I've never seen a better cable connection layout, never. It's
magnificent! It's in the front of the unit at the bottom right under a
push-to-close longitudinal door and illuminated by a white LED. The cables
mount to their respective HDMI, Component, Computer Video in, etc, areas, but
there's an egress area that lets the cables go where you want them to (out the
back of the unit for example which is where mine go).

3) Takes about 30 seconds plus to get to viewable picture with the
high-intensity lamp (about 6,000 hours to 50% brightness. I'm sure I'd get a
replacement prior to that). Costs about $350 as a replacement.

4) $3k gets one a 58"with

a. Component Input 1 & 2 (YPbPr) : 1080p/1080i/720p/480p/480i HDMI :
1080p/1080i/720p/480p/480i analog cable/antenna input. PS, it handles multiple
refreshes even at 24, 30 & 60 at 1080p.

b. Comes WITH CableCard on the 58" or better units.

5) Eats 4.5 amps, so power isn't a great problem.

6) Pincushion noticeable but not so severe that I can't live with it.

7) Studio mode out-of-the-box was fairly accurate (as they come out of
the box) and the presets were also accurate. Overscan was VERY low (in the
3%-ish range).

8) After professional calibration (a colleague and I did it with our
newfound testing equipment) the colors are almost bang-on; gamut is where they
need to be, grey scales are smooth and accurate.

9) Remote is fine, unlit but the buttons are well placed when I try to
use it and have no real problems

10) On-Screen display is the best I've seen; and it works regardless of the
input (all are programmable and non-volatile) and easy to use.

11) 150-watt light output is *very* bright and sometimes a bit too bright. Can
easily take ambient light.

12) Sound is really good, but regardless of their comments (HP) on on-board
woofer, it should be connected to a REALLY good surround to make it shine. It's
good, but an external sound system is better.

There are more reasons I like the boxen, but that's a start. As sensitive as I
am to the rainbows, this unit reduces them to a level I can tolerate. I'd say,
as my HP compadre says, "I prefer DLP for longevity and Plasma for picture
quality; I think DLP RP is the best value out of the two." He also adds: "For
front projection, I prefer LCS. I'm all over the map."

Seems fine to me :)

 Scott
