   Cookies are a poor comparison.  User's have control over their =
cookies whether they exercise it or not.

   Your claim re Passport is a false one.  You don't need to look at Jet =
Blue.  Look at ebay or amazon or any of a large number of sites, = involved in
commerce or otherwise, that use authentication.  For = authenticated access
they don't need to use any tricks.  They users have = explicitly authenticated
with their systems and they use the identity = (however they handle this
internally) of their authenticated user.  The = means of authentication is
irrelevant and there may, and in the case of = ebay are, multiple mechanisms. 
Some of these sites also allow = non-authenticated access for some activities. 
I haven't looked but have = no doubt that some use cookies or other unreliable
mechanism to both = increase the level of service they provide to users and
there knowledge = of the unauthenticated activity of these users.  The
authentication = mechanism, at least Passport and standard HTTP auth
mechanisms, provide = no help or harm.

   It is obvious that if you authenticate your authenticated identity is =
known.  If you want to be anonymous, don't authenticate using any = personally
identifable info.  If you want to authenticate but fear that = someone may try
to make correlations between your usage, use multiple = identities.  The trade
off between unease of use your paranoia is up to = you.  I suggest you only use
internet cafes for which you pay by cash as = your ISP, like george, can watch
all your activity.
