Ellen,

You are confused ;->

As soon as you see the lights go off it is time to gracefully power down = your
systems instead of waiting for the battery to go flat. And the = serial
connection from the UPS is designed to that automatically. = Connect the serial
cable, install a bit of software and then the UPS = sends a message to the PC
to shutdown.

Plug the laptop in to the UPS because it also provides surge protection. = You
don't want to have any of your systems unprotected while the power = company is
getting its act together. In fact you want to completely = disconnect them from
the power and telephone grids. Unplug everything, = light some candles and have
a nice glass of wine. Ugly stuff can happen = while the power company is
restoring things.

Geo recently recommended the Belkin Regulator Pro 1400 VA NetUPS and =
now
that I finally got to CDW to check it out (spurred by multiple =
momentary
outages over the past few hours), being hardware-challenged I have =
some
  questions:

  1. Currently I have two machines on my home network -- the old 386 =
W95
and the Dell P4 W2K. I am considering getting another cheapish =
machine
and a DSL line, which might (but might not) replace the 386. =20
       A. Is this unit appropriate for this set of boxes? (If you =
think
not, what would you recommend instead and why?)
       B. If I also got a laptop that would be on the network when it's
at home, would it need to be plugged into the UPS or would it
automatically switch to its own internal battery in the event of an
  outage?

  2. The spec says the battery run time is 7 minutes. This would
definitely cover outages like I've been seeing today, but:
       A. What happens AFTER the outage? Does the battery recharge
itself by virtue of the fact that the device is plugged into the wall?
       B. How often would I need to replace the battery?
       C. How much do replacement batteries cost?
       D. How difficult are replacement batteries to install?

  3. The spec also says the device includes a serial cable and 9 pin
  D-Sub (DB-9) connector, RS-232C interface. I am totally confused, I
imagined it plugs into the wall and I plug the power cords of my =
devices
(at least the computers) into it. What is this other connector for?

  4. Just curious, why does it need to weigh 55 lbs?

  TIA
