Ellen,

You may know from my various posts over the years that I worked as a = power
lineman for a while. When we were trying to restore power after a = service
disruption, particularly if it was a wide spread one, bad stuff = would happen.
Repair a high-voltage primary line, think we had solved = the problem for one
area, replace the fuse, and punch it back in only to = have it blowup
spectacularly! Search the run some more, find another = high voltage line down
which is lying across the secondary. When we = plugged the fuse back in 7.2KV
was shunted in to every house connected = to that secondary for a brief period.

The why so, in the above scenario, is that the protection circuitry in = your
unit probably took a spike when the first outage occurred, and it = definitely
took another in the second. The first one likely weakened the = protection
circuitry, the second one could have overwhelmed it.

Here is how I handle things with an approaching severe thunder storm, I = shut
everything down, unplug the surge protectors from the wall outlets, =
disconnect the cable TV and DSL lines. I only rely on my surge = protectors for
the completely unexpected.

Besides unless you bought a really humongous UPS, the shutdown time of = your
system may use up a significant time of its capacity.
