I cannot disagree, though it *does* seem to be worse since Linux came onto the
scene. btw, this jogged a memory of an old comment I had made. I rummaged
through some files and found it...

Microsoft won't cancel anything. More likely, if they start tiring of a
magazine's endorsements of competitors' products, Microsoft will stop supplying
the magazine with the access to the technical info needed to stay ahead of the
pack.

Did you notice that after Mr. Schulman published his book on W95, he lost
access to the WINBTU forum through an administrative error?

Did you notice that after InfoWorld's article on the W95 memory problems, they
were having difficulty obtaining copies of the W95 beta?

Coincidence? Maybe. According to Mr. Ballmer in a WSJ article (Feb, 2, 1995
"Microsoft Credo: Reward Friends, Stiff Rivals"), Microsoft's policy in these
matters are, "'If we have a choice whether to put our ... support into somebody
who is positive or negative to us, which do you think we do?', [Mr. Ballmer]
asked rhetorically...." And Peter Higgins, Applications chief at Microsoft had
this to say on the matter, "It's a common thing in business life to say, 'you
do this for me, and I'll do this for you,'..."

I noticed that when Microsoft announced the Netware File and Print Services
beta for NT that PCWeek was the only one of the weeklies that had an "first
look" article on it on January 16, 1995, the day the press release was issued.
Coincidence? Infoworld said that their NDA on the product expired on Tuesday,
January 17, 1995. This effectively allowed PCWeek to get a one week scoop on
Infoworld.

Coincidence? Or another case of Microsoft rewarding its friends?
