I've got some wireless network security questions I'd like feedback on:

1.  Situation at principal residence.  Very large home in the middle of = 9.5
acres of land.  No neighbors within 500ft or so.

A.  Setup new DLink Router With VPN and NAT and Firewall.  VPN not on = yet and
Firewall is at the default settings which seemed ok as far as I = could tell. 
I am not worried about someone coming here with a laptop or = trying to get on
my connection from the street which is several hundred = feet away at its
nearest point.  To get better coverage through walls = and distance inside the
house I have installed a Hawking 6db gain = omnidirectional antennae on the
singles wireless access point.  I have = not enabled any data encryption, no
WEP or WPA and the DLink router = which seems excellent by the way handles all
of these if I wanted to.  I = haven't enabled encryption so as not to incur any
overhead on = internet/network speeds.

B.  I have done two security things.  I disabled broadcast of the SSID, = and I
disabled response to a ping on the router from the WAN/Internet = side.

Given my circumstances as described above.  What do you think?  = Suggestions
or problems?


2.  Second situation.  Apt in major city.  Definitely need higher = security, I
used to ride another guys wireless connection for a week = while waiting for my
internet access to get turned on in the Apt.  He = finally caught on and
encrypted his signal, but there were still 2 or 3 = other guys wide open I
could see.

Will stoping the broadcast of SSID be enough at the apartment.  What = about
that plus limiting access to certain mac addresses?  If I turn on = WEP (this
netgear router isn't as feature complete or as fast as the = DLink Airplus
Extremes I've now got at home - WEP and no WPA for the = netgear) how much slow
down will that make?  What key strength should I = use and how should I pick
the keys?  Do I need to fill in all 4 = different keys that the router might
allow?  Anything else?
