Turning off everything you don't use will help, that's one of the basic =
principles of securing a machine. Instead of blocking ports turn off = what's
holding them open and there is less to hack at. Think of it like = a building
with doors and windows, it's easier to secure if there are = less doors and
windows than if there are more. So yes, if you don't use = filesharing then by
all means turn it off and you are more secure.

However eliminating 1 out of 6 doors, especially a door that is locked = by
default and uses a magnetic keycard to open, isn't going to make that = much
difference. It would make more difference to use good passwords (a = keycard
that is tougher to crack).

If you sit behind NAT or run a firewall that blocks inbound attempts, it =
makes even less difference.

So you would say it could help, but isn't bullet proof.

  Thanks,

  Gary

It depends on what is running on the machine. If file sharing is =
turned off but you have some exploitable service running like say telnet =
server, then yes it's possible to login remotely (or hack in if you use = an
exploit for the service) and gain full control of the machine. After = that you
can do anything you could do if you were sitting at the = machine.=20

The format of the HD is almost unimportant to the point of not =
mattering.

If on a Win2K or XP machine file sharing is turned off, even if a =
hacker gets into the network from the internet side can they get on that =
machine and do anything with it? Same question but assume hard drive is =
formatted FAT 32?
