They are used to dominating in a market where they are not the
gatekeepers/monpolists

Good for you. However you are not typical.

I have used both. I chose not to use a smartphone precisely because it is too
accessible & the off button & the fact that my laptop travel in a bag is more
peacefull.

I think it was the time I spent in Vodafone in the strand in London & their
Italian & German datacenters was enough for me & I could see which way it was
going there. I had to look at a number of smartphones & I was impressed by
symbian, palm & pocketPC.

However those who like constant communications & use their PC primarily as a
comms device (around me) prefer smartphones.

The limiting factor is the screen size. That's it. Enough memory, the wifi is
good enough, the browser, wordprocessor etc is good enough & it's in their
pocket & it's always on.

I have a strong feeling I will have to get one given I have had a number of
"don't you pick up your mail on the train", followed by "oh you use a phone
phone" when I explain that yes I can & periodically do pick up my mail
but...but it had it's content attached as a .doc & frankly on my little nokia
even if I could read .doc the screen is too small....etc.etc.etc.
