OK, the self-starter package arrived yesterday, sans the modem that I'm
leasing. Amazing, Comcast is so incompetent that the cannot even pick the
proper box off the shelf and ship it to me.

I stopped by the local Comcast office, showed my driver license and walked out
with a cable modem. After much grief (their install procedure requires the
evil Active-X to be activated in IE in order for the install to proceed)
(after waiting for 5 minutes for a tech to get back to me on their 800 number,
he hung up) I finally wound up working with a knowledgeable, helpful young
lady. I could barely understand her through the accent (Chinese?), but she
*knew* her stuff. On screen
scripts be damned, she got my connection working. ("OK, let's try this, I think
it should work..." [it did])

Looks like the Comcast cable modem knows everything it needs to know. No need
for PPPOE or any garbage like that. I had to read the MAC address of the modem
to the young lady, so I suspect Comcast keys off of that for authentication.
No matter which of my PCs I plug into the cable modem, I get an active
connection. Of course the real test will be tomorrow when I plug the modem
into my OpenBSD firewall/router. Though I suspect it will still work.

Presuming Comcast can keep their DNS servers up, this may work until I can get
DSL service from my local ISP.

btw, I'm getting about 370kB/s download speeds.

 /m
