   Actually you should spout off on exactly how the GUI should be =
different. Instead you simply complain unable to explain why you are = capable
of keeping your machine from being infected with the very same = software you
complain is responsible for many users exercising bad = judgement.

   You are also lying when you say that it is "exactly the same GUI =
presentation" used for the two examples. The two are extemely = different.
Would you say that all choices with two options are exactly = the same?

  I think you've noticed that I have resisted the temptation to spout =
off
  about how something in the GUI could be different, or how some feature
  could be differently implemented. That's not my job.

  However, I have surrendered to the temptation of goading Microsoft
  supporters about the bottom line:
       There IS an army of infected Windows boxes.

  if ( ThereIsNoWayThisCouldHaveBeenAvoided )
      DontDoIT();
  else
      DoItAnotherWay();

  In the interests of balance, I will mention that I greatly admire =
Windows
  XP (and W2003 even more). Also, Office 2003 is sensational software.

  I would be more relaxed if only Microsoft would accept some =
responsibility
  for the present security mess.

  > This isn't a usability issue.

  In case aliens ever read this thread in a hundred years, I will spell =
out
  that my point was that Microsoft has spent serious time and money on
  testing users. If anyone should know what users are capable of, it =
should
  be Microsoft. It's simply not a good idea to design a GUI that:

  1. Pampers users 99% of the time ("Are you sure you want to delete =
that
  file?", "By the way, there is a Recycle Bin in case you change your =
mind
  later", "Use UNDO to fix blunders"); -and-

  2. Uses exactly the same GUI presentation to handle executable =
attachments
  from spoofable sources.

  John
