Here's where I think things stand.

Ahem.

For years the liberals lied and got away with it because the main stream 
media was their ally; there was no alternative to the main stream media. 
Every Republican president but Nixon in recent memory has been portrayed as 
stupid except Nixon and he was portrayed as evil.

On the other hand, Democrat presidents and their contenders have been, like 
Adli Stevenson, portrayed as intellectual giants.  Kennedy along with his 
whole clan was annointed.  Does Cuomo ring a bell?  How about Hilary?  Ma 
Richards was on her way until she got sidetracked by that unintellectual 
George W. Bush.  With all of this going for him, Carter was too stupid to 
get out of his own way.  How many times have we heard that in private, Al 
Gore is the life of the party.  What a crock!  That's crock, not 
crook...well, that too. <g>  How many people flunk out of Divinity School?

FDR and Truman hobnobbed with agents from the throne of Stalin, "Uncle Joe" 
as they fondly called him.  Carter spent his whole adult life saying that 
Communism isn't so bad.  Clinton gave military secrets to China and a ship 
terminal in California in exchange for campaign funds.  To Ramsey Clark the 
worst Communist dictator is nothing but agrarian reformer.

The Democrats have had their share of surprises.  What should they expect 
when they start believing their own lies.  I think one of the biggest, 
before the stunning election in Iraq was the election in Nicaragua.  Of 
course there was plenty of egg on their faces after Jim Wright's "Dear 
Commandante" letter that was immediately followed by Ortega's Moscow trip. 
Reagan's defeat of Communism is still their biggest surprise and tragedy. 
They still won't admit it, but Reagan called his shot first.  It was no 
fluke.  Remember how the liberals quaked in fear of Reagan's confrontation 
of the USSR?  Now they claim that that nation was crumbling from the inside. 
Funny, they lied about that too. <g>

The cruelest surprise was when the Democrat lies were exposed via new means 
of communication.  Talk radio, cable news, the Internet.  Each played a role 
in breaking the back of the left-wing monopoly and happily, they all 
happened in our lifetime.  Democrats are like a kid caught with his hand in 
the cookie jar.  Their sin is right there for everyone to see - and they 
can't stand it.  Their erstwhile allies, like the NY Times, the LA Times, 
and the Washington Post, along with the traditional three TV networks, are 
paddling like crazy, but alas, they are naked.  (Not nude, but nude and up 
to something.  Louis Grizzard - rest in peace.)

Now they are acting like any wild animal which finds itself surrounded.  It 
just strikes out wildly in every direction - no direction in particular. 
They have nothing left but venom.  Harry Reid's calling Bush a loser is not 
the act of someone who is confident that he has right on his side.  Notice 
that Democrat proclamations are always short on detail.  They swipe with 
grandiose strokes and hope that no one will ask them about the details. 
During the recent presidential campaign, Kerry stated over and over that he 
had a plan for this and that, but he would never disclose the details. 
Hint: there were none - there was no plan.

In short, your search for a smart liberal is doomed. <g>  Even a search for 
a pleasant liberal seems hopeless.
