AH>Harsh reality for Iraqi people tough to square with president's speech

AH>By Trudy Rubin

AH>July 1, 2005

AH>BAGHDAD - It's hard to juxtapose President Bush's speech on Iraq on
AH>Tuesday with the realities in Baghdad.

The problem with so-called `journalists' like this Trudy Rubin is, they are so
hell-bent on denouncing Bush and America they wouldn't report anything
positive about Iraq if it brought them the Pulitzer.

AH>to work, shop, take university exams, but their daily lives are defined by
AH>the violence of an insurgency that doesn't end.

Another thing so-called `journalists' like this Trudy Rubin don't seem to be
doing is separating ordinary `Iraqis', from `foreign invaders'; which is what
the terrorists setting off car bombs, kidnapping and be-heading victims on
camera really are. Very few, if any, are Iraqis.

AH>dizzying corkscrew landing to avoid a potential missile. Neither U.S. nor
AH>Iraqi troops have figured out how to protect the 10 miles of road from the
AH>airport to the city center.

Another thing so-called `journalists' don't seem to be able to do is write a
column detailing the many good things American troops have done in Iraq, and
don't seem able to write a column that doesn't slam American troops and their
presence in Iraq in general, and the president in particular, in just about
every paragraph.

And this broad isn't any different.

AH>Cars sometimes come hurtling out of side streets, their occupants firing
AH>on convoys. Iraqis have developed rules of defensive driving.

Its amazing how quickly the various torture chambers Saddam's sons operated
get forgotten by so-called `journalists', or the `rape rooms'.

AH>academics, doctors, anyone involved in politics, clerics, Iraqi police or
AH>Iraqi military and anyone working with Americans, journalists and
AH>foreigners. Of the many Iraqis I know, there isn't one whose friends or
AH>family haven't been touched by postwar violence.

Oddly, not a word about the many thousands of bodies found in mass graves that
have been uncovered, relatives of the victims awaiting word of their loved one
being identified so they can be given a decent burial.

AH>falling below prewar levels because of degraded infrastructure, poor U.S.
AH>planning for the postwar and sabotage.
AH>or water, which depends on electricity for pumps. And they have no
AH>television to distract them from their troubles.

Isn't it amazing that so-called `journalists' haven't boned up on how it was
in the immediate aftermath of WWII in Germany and Japan. And realized that,
immediately after major combat operations, infra-structure is sketchy at best,
non'existent in some places for quite awhile.

AH>because "Iraq is a central front in the war on terror." The sad truth is
AH>that Iraq became a mecca for foreign terrorists after the war because of a
AH>lack of U.S. planning for the postwar and huge mistakes during the
AH>occupation.

And it never ceases to amaze me how so-called `journalists' could have
completed a college education in journalism, landed a job in the news
reporting field, arisen to their present exalted position in their chosen
profession, and manage so adroitly to blame the fuckin' war on terrorists on
`America' and American troops in general, and George W. Bush in particular,
while ignoring the many extremely good reasons why we are in this war in the
first place.

AH>The Iraqi people are paying for those mistakes - for the U.S.
AH>failure to establish postwar order, which let an insurgency grow, and for
AH>the disbanding of the old Iraqi army, which left the Iraqis with no means
AH>of defense. The administration also failed to fashion a policy to woo
AH>alienated Sunnis, who make up the bulk of those attacking U.S. soldiers.

THese so-called `journalists' are knocking themselves out degrading America's
efforts to stop the terrorist criminals, fight them far from American shores,
and destroy their leadership and infrastructure.

AH>It will be years at best before the new Iraqi army is capable of securing
AH>the country. Only a political process that brings Sunnis into the
AH>government stands a chance of undercutting the insurgency. The prognosis
AH>for this process is uncertain.

It was "years at best" before Germany and Japan were ready to take on the
military security of their own borders after WWII.

AH>But until Iraqis reach a formula for domestic peace, any swift American
AH>pullout would plunge Iraq into even worse chaos. "God help the Iraqis if
AH>America pulls out too soon," one Iraqi told me. "But God help the
AH>Americans if they stay in Iraq."

AH>Trudy Rubin is a columnist for The Philadelphia Inquirer. Her column
AH>appears Tuesdays and Fridays in The Sun.

I want to point out to you something thats going to piss you right
off.......(tough).

If there had been a gathering of World Jews taking place at Madison Square
Garden on 9\11, with thousands of Jews of all sorts inside, and the two planes
had struck there instead, killing three or four thousand Jews, there'd be no
complaint whatever about America taking the war on terrorists anywhere in the
Middle East it chose!

You know that, and so do I.

I also want to point something else out to you that will no doubt piss you
right off as well........(tough).

America is `in' this war as a direct result of Israel and American support of
Israel over many decades. `Spin' it any way you choose, but without America's
support for Israel all these decades, the Middle Eastern terrorists wouldn't
have ever bothered us.

So you really need to stop hunting up every fuckin' article you can find that
runs America down, and maybe start trying to find something `positive' about
America and its president. After all, had the president `not' gone to war
against the mid-eastern terrorist organizations run by bin Laden and his ilk,
instead tried to `make peace' with the murderers, Israel would be out on a
limb right now.

Try to remember that `America' is the side of the bread Israel's butter is on.
If America does bad in this war, or loses it, Israel goes down the tubes.

So when you look at it in the proper light, Israel has a pretty big stake in
this fight and its ultimate outcome.
