Ärende: atomic bomb question
============================
Hello Ross,

>LL>The Japanese high command had offered to surrender a full month
>LL>before mass murderer Harry S Truman ordered atomic bombs to be
>LL>dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

>RC>Prove it..

>LL>"Racing the Enemy: Stalin, Truman, and the Surrender of Japan",
>LL>by Tsuyoshi Hasegawa, a professor of history at the University of
>LL>California, Santa Barbara.

>LL>Professor Hasegawa notes the Japanese offered to surrender toward
>LL>the end of July 1945, but that offer was rejected by Harry S Truman
>LL>as an excuse to drop atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Truman's
>LL>argument being he insisted on an "unconditional" surrender.

RC>There you have it, unconditional surrender was the terms we would accept..

That was merely the excuse Truman used to vaporize the yellow people of
Japan. Had we had atomic bombs in April of 1945, we would not have used
them against the white people of Germany.

RC>Japan dictated on their terms the start of the war, we dictated how it would
RC>end, which included the dismantling of their military, sovereignty returned
RC>conquered territories and a revised government.

If Truman really wanted an unconditional surrender, all that was
necessary was to enforce a naval blockade on Japan. That would have
forced the Japanese leadership to accept an unconditional surrender
within a month, or two at most.

RC>Thanks for jogging my memory, I do recall (from historical accounts) the
RC>Japanese preferring to surrender to us as opposed to Stalin, whose forces at
RC>that time had made piece meal of japanese troops in manchuria. However they
RC>didnt want to surrender unconditionally.

You'd better re-read the Potsdam agreement, and understand Stalin's
agreement to remain neutral towards Japan. It was not the dropping of
atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki that forced the Japanese
leadership to accept an unconditional surrender, but rather Stalin's
invasion of Manchuria, etc.

RC>Too bad..

Had Stalin not been convinced to stop his aggression, the Soviets would
have invaded all of Japan.

RC>In the end, the Japanese did awaken the slumbering giant and the got
RC>more than they bargained for.

No. Stalin got more than he bargained for. Once Truman dropped
atomic bombs on populated Japanese cities, Stalin knew what was coming
had he ordered a Soviet invasion of Japan.

RC>Now that the Japanese knew we werent gonna accept anything but a uncondition
RC>surrender, they were gonna fight like madman, like they did at Iwo Jima,
RC>Tarrawa and Okinawa. All things considered a conditional surrender would be
RC>unacceptable. The war with japan wasnt no police action, was no simple borde
RC>dispute, get over it.

The dropping of atomic bombs did nothing to deter the Japanese
leadership from continuing the fight. It was Stalin's aggression
that caused the Japanese leadership to surrender unconditionally.

RC>All you have to know is that we disagree on Trumans solution,
RC>I agree with it, you do not, neither of us can change what is done,
RC>get it?

If anyone can be blamed for dropping atomic bombs on populated Japanese
cities, that blame belongs to Josef Stalin. Not the Japanese.

RC>Now explain the attempted Coup on Hirohito?

Hirohito survived.
Akihito lives.

--Lee
