Oh, and of course, YOU are the expert we should all listen to, right?  Hah!

Thurston gets points for his experience for having lived through it, for being
there, and nothing more.  Those are his experiences, not everybody else's
experiences, and he was certainly in no position to see the overall picture. 
That is why we rely on historians and other qualified experts who have made it
their life's work to study wars, politics, economics, etc.

However, I will give Thurston more points than I will you on this subject,
since he at least was there, and you weren't.  Hell, I can pick up the phone
and call a couple dozen old boys who WERE over there during the island-hopping
campaign, the run-up to Operation Olympic, and Japanese Occupation duty -
including my own father. But then, there are a lot of things you yap about that
you think makes you an expert that you haven't experienced first hand any more
than the rest of us.

Oh, and one final note.  Just as Thurston did, you entirely missed the point of
Jeff's post.  Rather ironic that you, the great expert, can't recognize simple
sarcasm when you read it.
