They have an interesting system in Singapore.  If you don't have a job,
they'll get you one -- for example, in the US we trim highway margins
with bushhogs.  In Singapore, they do it with hand-held weed-eaters --
provides jobs for those who need them.

But if they give you a job and you don't work -- you can starve.

This is a major problem -- for years the pro-welfare crowd used the
children as hostages.  No matter what a woman did, you couldn't fail to
pay her welfare "because of the children."

If you want a lot of something, subsidize it.  We subsidized children
born to unwed mothers, and got a lot of them.

Now people will say, "A single mother can raise a child as well as
anyone," and the reply is, "Yes, and you can win the lottery, too -- but
the odds are against it."

Many of our problems are related to births out of wedlock and children
raised on welfare -- bad education, school drop out rate, drug abuse and
crime are all coorelated with children raised by single parents on
welfare.

As I said, you can win the lottery -- but don't make that your
retirement strategy.  We need a system that encourages people NOT to
have children out of wedlock and to STAY married and raise their
children.  Instead, we have one which does the opposite.
