The FIRST thing to do is check with the Better Business Bureau to make sure
they are all legit companies, with no, or few, complaints concerning quality of
work, followup on problems, etc.

Afterwards, you want the highest R value for insulation purposes, and you
should get rid of the old siding.  Get the highest R value you can within your
budget.  Also, check with your home owner's insurance agent to see if you get
any breaks on insurance for upgrading to vinyl.

I would also check on the other aftermarket siding types to see if there is
anything that offers the same value at a lower cost, such as aluminum, spray-on
coating, etc.
