GB> The guy has impressive credentials.

GB> I remember the guy after I read your litany of his jobs, etc.

GB> I have read some of his work years ago after seeing him as one of the
GB> many "experts" trotted out just after 9/11.

GB> He has a fundamental flaw in his thinking about terrorism and as a
GB> result, he got bit along with all the others when 9/11 came.

GB> Johnson views terrorism as a purely tactical problem, not a strategic
GB> one, thus his criticism for Israel's use of massive force.

GB> Its true that much of terrorism had been dealt with with CTUs like the
GB> SAS, GSG-9, etc in the past during the 70s and 80s and that they were
GB> mostly controlled and sponsored by the USSR.

GB> With the end of the cold war, Johnson's reasoning failed to change. He
GB> even viewed state sponsored terrorism (the USSR) as not a strategic
GB> threat. It was not under the USSR.

GB> However with Libya, Iran and Syria, terrorism became means to strategic
GB> ends. Especially with the advent of more powerful and simple-to-use
GB> weapon systems that began to come online in the 80s and 90s with
GB> potential for more damage and images being able to manipulate the media
GB> and governments. It became strategic. With militaries unable to stand up
GB> to Western powers, terrorism became standard policy.

GB> Johnson wrote an article in 2001, Larry C. Johnson, "The Declining
GB> Terrorist Threat," New York Times.

GB> "They seem to believe that terrorism is the greatest threat to the
GB> United States and that it is becoming more widespread and lethal. They
GB> are likely to think that the United States is the most popular target of
GB> terrorists. And they almost certainly have the impression that extremist
GB> Islamic groups cause most terrorism. None of these beliefs are based in
 GB> fact."

GB> A few months later we get hit with 9/11. Any attack that kills so many
GB> people is not a tactical one, nor is a terrorist using or seeking WMD, a
 GB> tactical threat.

GB> Johnson stands by his article even today stating he never said we should
GB> ignore terrorism. He even mentioned in years past that OBL and Al Qaeda
GB> were the premier threats in terrorism.

GB> His major flaw is not dismissing terrorism, but diminishing it to
GB> something a state should not have to worry about too much. Its a
GB> tactical thing. Send a squad of the SAS in to root the roaches out and
 GB> be done with it.

GB> Its that kind of thinking that allowed terrorism to recover after the
GB> 70s and we, the US made terrorism just a law enforcement issue to be
 GB> dealt with.

GB> Al Qeda grew because few took it seriously as any kind of a threat.

GB> Hezbollah and Hamas are controlled by Iran and Syria. They use them as
GB> instruments of policy. Not as small time harassment.

GB> Terrorists hide and work among and behind innocent people.

 GB> Those innocents will die.

GB> The terrorists bank on it, either by their hand or their enemey's hand.

GB> When you come up with a plan to only kill terrorists, get back to me.

GB> We will bring it before the world and rightfully so be considered heroes.

I hope you aren't holding your breath because you will never get any kind of
plan out of him. He's far too busy running his mouth about how bad Bush is.
