MG> Carter's book a distorted view of Israel

Carter's anti-Semitism is well documented. I recall him dragging that
greasy little Jew-killing terrorist Yasser Arafat all over the United
States, including Georgia, several years ago. I don't remember what the two
creeps were doing as they traveled the country, but I recall with clarity
Goober introducing Arafat as his friend wherever they went.

Less known about Carter was the racist nature of his campaign for Georgia
governor in 1970. Now, racist/segregationist campaigns here were not
unusual here at the time, but Carter was supposed to be a new school
Southern democrat, a social liberal and political antithesis of Lester
Maddox.

During the summer of the 1970 campaign, civil rights and religious leaders
from all over the Georgia met in Macon for a conference, lead by Hosea
Williams, an old friend of MLK, Jr. While the conference was going on,
candidate Carter called Hosea and asked him to come to Atlanta for a
meeting. During the meeting, Carter promised that if Hosea would go back to
Macon and endorse him for governor, he would appoint blacks to state
judgeships, to seats on the state Board of Pardons and Paroles and to
leadership positions in the Georgia State Patrol. Hosea, in good faith,
returned to Macon and in endorsing Carter personally, told the conference
what Carter offered if blacks would turn out and vote for him. The
conference adjourned by endorsing Carter for governor.

The night Carter was elected (with overwhelming black support), Hosea
traveled to his campaign offices in Atlanta to present the governor elect
with list of possible black candidates for the positions Carter promised.
Not only did Carter have no intention of keeping his promise, he refused to
meet Hosea at all, instead sending his attorney to say, "Hosea, you know
Jimmy can't appoint these people." He dismissed Hosea as if he were some
uppity field hand asking for better working conditions.

Hosea Williams was a good man - a fearless man, but trusting Carter hurt him
in the eyes of other civil rights leaders and black church members. They
felt betrayed by both men and regarded Hosea to be a fool for trusting
Carter. It took Hosea more than 10 years to regain his reputation after
that debacle, and he had an unlikely ally to assist him.

During the 1980 presidential campaign, candidate Ronald Reagan called Hosey
and asked if they could meet in Detroit to discuss the upcoming election.
Hosea agreed and flew to Michigan and to Reagan's hotel room in Detroit.
Reagan told Hosea, "If you go back to Georgia and endorse me, I will make
Martin Luther King's birthday a national holiday if I am elected president."
Once bitten twice shy, Hosea balked at the offer. At first. After more
than an hour of haggling, Reagan convinced Hosea that he was sincere, so
Hosea flew back to Atlanta and - to the astonishment of the civil rights
community - endorsed Ronald Reagan for president on the basis of his promise
of a King holiday.

The King holiday bill met with a great deal of congressional opposition, but
on the strength of presidential support and urging, it passed. Reagan
signed the bill into law in November 1983.

During one of the last interviews before he died, Hosey told historian Mel
Steely, "Only two politicians never told me lie, Lester Maddox and Ronald
Reagan."
