Without going into a lot of technobabble, making it the default just makes it
easier for the system to do things for you, and will speed things up a bit
because it doesn't have to check to see if its violating anything on the
default side. Makes the automated updating work very nicely as well. There is
a nice little add-on you can install (on Firefox) that will allow you to switch
the rendering engine from Mozilla to Microsoft for those sites that won't run
under anything but MS IE.

On the Win98 thing, if you installed XP in a separate partition, then you
should be able to just delete the 98 partition files, and then use something
like Partition Magic 8 to fold that partition back into the XP side.

If you installed over 98 in the same partition then you should have a separate
directory on your C: drive called Windows (or maybe Win98, etc.) and another
one for XP (could be WinNT or something like). In any case, you'll have two
main windows directories. Determine which is the one from 98, and then you can
delete that one.

Of course, it depends to some extent on how you installed XP. When I did mine,
it asked me if I wanted to retain the ability to boot up Win2K or remove it. I
chose to remove it, so the XP Pro install nuked most of the old version for me.
But, you could also install it in a different directory, in which case you
have to manually get rid of the old stuff.

Obviously, the best way to go is to reformat the drive and install XP fresh as
if on a brand new drive. It might even be worth the effort to reinstall it now
if you have all your data backed up from the original upgrade. Also, XP Pro
runs much faster than XP Home, and has fewer problems overall. You should run
2G of ram as well for best performance.
