Really?

Actually they didn't.  Their armies were stopped in Spain and in the Balkans.
It took about 300 years to push them out of Spain, and there's still a
considerable
Muslim population in the Balkans.

Islam has managed to co-exist reasonably peacefully with the rest of the planet
for
several centuries.  In recent times there have been events that have caused
some
Islamics to violently react - the establishment of the state of Israel squarely
in the
middle of Islamic territory in 1948, for example.  There has been considerable
violent
unrest in that part of the Middle East for over half a century, but it was
pretty much
confined to Palestine (which  includes Israel) - and we can thank Yasser Arafat
for
much of that.

The presence of US forces in Islamic territory - Iraq and Afghanistan (and the
Emirates, which is going to cause those leaders a lot of trouble in the future)
- is
the irritant that causes formerly non-militant Islamics to join up with the
radicals.
Absent that irritant the radicals would find recruiting much more difficult. 
Remember
that bin Laden's original gripe with the US was that US forces were stationed
in
Saudi Arabia - he has, of course, since widened his horizons.
