That's true enough ... however, who really *knows* what I might 
have done? ... I've been in other *real* dangerous situations and 
have amazed myself with my ability to stand up to them.  Of 
course I've *never* had to face anyone with a gun.

Furthermore, consider my situation at the time:  I thought there 
might be an intruder in the basement.  Should I just ignore that?  
I don't think so.  Should I call the cops?  No way, since I had 
no substantial evidence that there really *was* anyone there -- 
and that later proved to be the case ... the basement was empty.  
So I was faced with a problem which *I* had to solve myself.  
I've spent most of my life solving problems on my own.  Hence I 
picked up the Luger and went into the basement.  If I *had* run 
into someone, based on past experience, I'd have "solved" that 
"problem" also ...

I'm very familiar with the Luger ... I can even hit targets with 
it ... [sigh] ... I can take it apart, oil it, re-assemble it, 
etc.  I'm not really helpless.

No argument there ...

... But of COURSE the Universe does not make sense!
