I'm sure that's right.  They can't leave stuff lying around forever.  I was 
just glad she remembered Charles and took the effort to visit the memorial.

She also called me from the Marine Memorial asking which of the flag-raisers 
was Harlon Block.  Harlon was the one farthest down on the pole.

Harlon went to the school where we taught in Weslaco, TX - down in the Rio 
Grande Valley.

This was well before I was there, but I know some alums who went to school 
with Harlon.  He transfered to Weslaco High School to play football where he 
was a star.  There were fifteen seniors on that team as best I remember 
reading, and the high school rushed them through so they graduated at 
Christmas instead of in the spring.  Then, all of the seniors, every last 
one of them, were sworn into the Marine Corps at the same time in San 
Antonio.

Harlon was killed by a mortar shortly after the famous photo was taken. 
That was actually the second flag-raising on Iwo Jima.  The photographer 
wanted another chance - and made the most of it.

When the picture was first released, Harlon was misidentified by the armed 
services.  Harlon's mother immediately remarked upon seeing the photo that 
that guy was her son, Harlon.  Later the military corrected themselves.
