=================================
Hello John,

>LL>Hey. Money talks. People listen. :)

>SD>Wonder if I said if someone didn't send me a million bucks, God
>SD>was gonna strike me down with lightening.

>LL>It only works for televangelists.

>SD>Knowing /MY/ friends, they'd say, "And...?" :>

>LL>A few months ago, a Baptist preacher proclaimed in front of his
>LL>congregation, "God, show me a sign!" - at which time a bolt of
>LL>lightning hit the steeple and really lit up the place. That
>LL>really put the fear of God into the preacher, as well as his
>LL>congregation. So be careful what you ask for. You might get more
>LL>than you want or expect. :)

>JH>I suppose next you're gonna tell us this was on a bright sunny day,
>JH>out of a clear blue sky, right?

>LL>Nah. It was a dark and stormy night...

>JH>I'll bet if we check the weather we'll find it was during a
>JH>thunderstorm and that the church steeple (with its obligatory
>JH>lightning rod) was the highest point around, making it a natural
>JH>attraction any lightning bolts.

>LL>But the timing of when that lightning bolt hit, and where it
>LL>hit...

JH>Pure coincidence, and a healthy dose of superstition among Baptists.

Yep. But tell that to a bunch of Bible-thumping Baptists. ;)

>JH>Don't ascribe to miracles that which can be explained by common
>JH>sense and natural occurrences.

>LL>Back in the 1970's, around the time two fellows got abducted by
>LL>space aliens in Pascagoula, Mississippi, I scared the living
>LL>daylights out of the local folk by pointing out "spaceships"
>LL>visiting Earth. It was during the fall, when the weather changes.
>LL>The location was a church fair, being held at night. After sunset,
>LL>when it was dark, one could look at the stars and notice some of the
>LL>stars beginning to move slowly across the sky, then suddenly move
>LL>very fast in a different direction. Those stars looked a bit
>LL>different from other stars, being that the moving stars twinkled in
>LL>different colors.

>LL>By spreading a rumor that those stars were "spaceships", I
>LL>convinced lots of people that Earth was being invaded by beings from
>LL>outer space. People fled the scene in panic, leaving the church
>LL>grounds empty on a Saturday night.

>LL>To explain what happened - it was swamp gas rising, thus creating
>LL>a "bubble", which made some stars appear to twinkle and move slowly
>LL>for a while, and then quickly across the sky.

JH>I was just going to say, it sounds like swamp gas or something similar.
JH>However, your fun notwithstanding, I do believe we have been visited by UFO'
JH>There is a hard core of sighting data, some 15%, that has always defied
JH>explanation any other way. There are entirely too many reputable people who
JH>are trained observers in various fields who have reported sightings for ther
JH>not to be something to it. I hope I live long enough to find out the answer

Jimmy Carter reported seeing a UFO while in Georgia. Ronald Reagan
believed in the existence of UFOs. And Gerald Ford ordered a study on
UFOs. Bill Clinton is rumored to have also ordered such a study.

The best evidence we have for the existence of UFOs is the Moon.
Two Russian scientists, using data from NASA, presented a theory that
the Moon is a spaceship that was driven here by beings from far away.
Their theory has never been disproven to this day.

On an interesting note, the plaque put on the Moon by astronauts
Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin reads -

HERE MEN FROM THE PLANET EARTH FIRST SET FOOT UPON THE MOON,
JULY 1969, A.D. WE CAME IN PEACE FOR ALL MANKIND.

However, the claim of the Moon for all mankind did not stop a certain
private company from selling tracts of land on the Moon. For less than
thirty bucks you can own a piece of the Moon. That's right. At least,
according to this web site - http://www.lunarlandrush.com

Of course, getting there could be a bit of a problem...
